Hello to everyone!

Iam a happy owner of a boss me-50 machine, but I recently read about the old boss me-5. the thing that most made me think about is the analogic sound of the distortion. have anyone any experience with them both to tell me if the me-5 has a nicer more natural distortion sound?

Hi mitja

Welcome to the forum from Australia.

Slovenia is a very lovely country.

Can I ask what part of Slovenia you are from?
I have some very close friends living in that part of the world.

The single number series ME's, like the ME-5 is are old, & sound & work, more like a bunch of analog pedals in a box.
It-they do sound a bit more organic, than later Boss multieffects units.

Some people prefer the older ME-5-6 & ME-8, for that very reason.
If you can find one of those models cheap & in good condition, see if you can buy it.

Look carefully at the plastic foot switch parts, the hinges sometime break.

It will give you different options and tones to the ME-50.

I recently repaired an ME-8, if you are technically inclined,
& want to see internal pictures let me know, or PM me.

Tone is very subjective, & in the end you really need to make the final choice.

Regards Dr. Bob

Hi Bob!

Thank you for your answer. I'm from Koper, Primorska region (near the sea).
I found an old '88 me-5 for 110 euro on the internet. Maybe I'll go for it. I'm not sure if it worths 110 euro; just to please my curiosity. I wasn't very satisfied with my me-50, so I bought a MXR KFK (I wished a BOSS GE-7 but I found a MXR at a very low price) equalizer and put it after the me-50. Now the sound is just great. For the music I play (heavy metal stuff) the satisfaction is 90%. Maybe the me-5 is the 10% missing.

Regards from Slovenija,
Mitja

Hi mitja
Congrats on the ME-8

I have some internal pics of the one I fixed for my cousin
The reverend, he pops in here on the forum every so often.

PM me, I can tell you the little silly things that can possibly
go wrong with this multi.
Maybe you can check those things out, when you get your.

Can I ask what you paid for it?
And did it come with a Box & manual?

Regards Dr. Bob

I'll pay 160 euro. Yes, it's a lot of monay for an effect from april 1998 (checked the s/n), but is the only one I found here in Slovenija. In Italy (the country next to us) the price are much lower. About 100-110 euro. But with the post expenses I think that the final price would be just the same.

The effect is (the seller sad to be) in very good conditions. He didn't use it very much (mostly capt in a closet). I'll see. It is from second hand, so I don't expect to get any user manuals or boxes. It doesn't matter, I found one on the net. In portugese, but better than nothing. Combined with italian I think I'll manage it quite well.

I'll be grateful for your advices about what could go wrong.

Have a nice weekend to all!

my final post on this copic is my estimation of both products: the me-50 and the me-8 (a still analogoc upgrade of the me-5. For far I know the main difference between the me-5 end me-8 is the amount of effects incorporated).

I have the me-50 for 4 years. It is a good m.effect.But if you put an equalizer after it, it will sound much better. you can add more gain to the distortion without deform the original sound, or make your own sound if wish. I used it with my marshall avt50H and a jackson warrior with emg81+85 pickups. The sound on the bossus presentation page is not a fake. It was really made with a ME-50. I could made the exact sound with mine using the gear above.

The other thing is the me-8. Mine was made in 1998. It has an analogic distortion wich make a difference. A hughe difference. If put the ME-50 on metal zone I had no way to make a sound like the me-8 also on metal zone effect. I owned a Boss MT-2 many years ago, so I can't compare wich of the two is closer to the original, but in my opinion the me-8 have a way more natural sound. there is no bee accompanying sound.

the second + is the equalizer. The me-50 has a tone modify knob that should replace the equalizer. It don't. The me-8 has just a 3 band equalizer, but you can reach much more expressive sound compared with me-50s tone modify. I really don't need my MXR KFK with the me-8!

All the above written is just the opinion that my ears made. If anyone has any question I will try to answer.

A good thing to compare the sound at your home is to vistit youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdxWOuCjyuI for the me-8 and http://www.bossus.com/gear/productdetails.php?ProductId=534 for the me-50.

Hi mitja

Thank you for your comparative review & suggestions.

I also hear that the ME-20 or the ME-50, have a noticeable delay when switching some or all the patches?

The Bee sound that you wrote about,
I think that, that is what the guys on the Multieffects forums & reviews call - FIZZ -

I believe that this is a byproduct of the COSM modeling on some high gain patches,
that manifests itself as an a Audio artifact.

I have a .PDF article fro the GT-8 called "GT-8 Brilliance"
that talks about setting up the GT-8 to minimize the FIZZ.
I am sure that it will be similar & useful for the ME-XX units as well.

PM me if you can't locate it on the web.

Regards Dr. Bob

yes, that momentary lost of sound lasts just like a quatrer of second but is still very annoying.
