It is a 1981 in excellent cosmetic condition. Both channels had failed, both easy fixes - broken ground wire on Channel 1 and broken PCB track on Channel 2.

Just needs a good clean and adjustment (of the chorus operating points) and it will be pretty much pristine. Boffo!

The 1981 model has the MN3004 BBD (the "low noise" version of the MN3002), so is pretty close to a CE-1. I'm telling myself I got a CE-1 for $70 that came with a free amp wrapped around it

Pics... (external pics will follow once I've finished the clean and repair).

All I can say is:

Excellent Everything....
Find.
Price.
Condition.
Repair.
Build Quality.
and Service Tech.

Those 2SD845 power output transistors are a killer.
It would be nice to have a few close-ups of those, with a small rule
next to them for comparative size.

Regards Dr. Bob

Great score! I had two of those back in the day (yes, I ran them in stereo...) and would love to have one again. Envy...

Yeah, it's pretty nice.

I can tell you though that it has taken nearly 10 hours work to repair the faults and do the routine maintenance.

It all seemed so simple...

1) Channel 1 input ground wire was broken. Easy fix.

2) Channel 2 power resistor had broken the track (improper fixing in the factory). Relatively easy fix.

3) Channel 1 "rustling sound". Turned out to be a dry joint on the channel 1 board... pain in the butt to find. Reflowed all the joints on the board once I found it.

4) Reverb pot carbon track was broken. Reverb went from 0% to 100% with a minute turn of the knob. Easy to find, but the pots are special (long fluted shaft) so had to dismantle the pot and rebuild it using parts from another pot. Took about an hour.

5) Channel 1 volume pot carbon track was broken. Channel 1 volume jumped to 100% when you pushed on the chassis. Easy to find, but the pots are special (long fluted shaft) so had to dismantle the pot and rebuild it using parts from another pot. This one took about 90 minutes.

6) Nearly all the thick black wires broke off the connection points. Crap wire. Replaced and reterminated. Reflowed all solder tag joints.

7) Dismantled everything, cleaned it, and lubricated the pots and switches.

8) Used the scope to reset the chorus drive and BBD operating point (they were way out).

The head is now working 100%. Sounds great! Pics to follow once the cabinet is cleaned.

Here is the front panel after a clean and touch up:

Funny how every "easy fix" you say sounds like ancient egyptian in my head... . You rock, Lauri, I wish I had half those skills and make my own loopers and things.

Very cool laurie.

James Hetfield from Metallica still uses one of those heads live for his clean sounds, and they're still using the combo version on all recordings, he had that one since "Ride the Lightning" in 1984.

Listen to the intro of "Enter sandman" for a really good JC 120 example.

That amp is actually on a lot of their clean stuff:

- Call of Ktulu from Ride the Lightning.
- Battery and Sanitarium from Puppets.
- Justice, To live is to die and One from and justice for all.
- Sandman and Notting else matters from the black album.
- A lot of the songs on Load and Reload, but that's hard to tell
since there was a lot more going on ampwise.

This is James' current live rig with the Roland head:

Also, please check this site if you'd like to know more about the gear Metallica used throughout the years:
