I currently biamp with an Ampeg J12T and a Musicman HD130. I'm wanting to phase out the Ampeg and incorporate a solid state of the Roland Jazz Chorus variety. I don't necessarily need the power of the JC120 model, but have always heard that it's by far the best-sounding clean you can get out of a solid state.
I'm wondering if the same holds true for the smaller versions of the Jazz Chorus line of amps. I'd like something with a smaller footprint than the 120 version if possible. Thoughts? Recommendations?
I've just been through the restoration of a JC120 and can attest that it's the best clean amp I've heard (probably ever).
The JC-77 isn't the same thing at all (I had the opportunity to try one and buy it a few weeks ago - I didn't). I'd say a JC-120 is the way to go, even though it is a big unit.
The power of a JC-120 is misleading... because it is SS, it isn't as loud as my 40W blackface reissue, but it does cut so will keep up for sure.
I agree that the JC120 has the best clean I've heard in a long time. I'm just wondering if any of the smaller versions fall way short. I know there's a couple different small versions of this amp like the JC90.
I have tried one of the smaller models (JC-55, I think) and it's speakers was not in the same class as the JC-120s speakers. It was hard to get that wide shimmering sound that the JC-120 is so good at.
