I just got back from checking out High On Fire in Charlottesville. Hell of a great show . You need to see them live any time you get the chance. Matt Pike is a great guitar player (uses a Boss TU-2 onstage as well), and the drummer Des gets sick metal beats using just one bass drum and pedal. My ears are still ringning cause I was in front of Matts Soldano/Laney powered Matamp cabinets, and I just had to tell someone....

Matt is one of my favorite guitarists. Did not dig a lot of Blessed Black Wings though. Wish he would slow down a bit like on the Sleep/early HOF stuff.

It kind of took me awhile to get into High On Fire because I liked Sleep so much it just didn't seem like it could possibly be the same guitarist at times, and some of the production on the early releases was a bit crappy too. Initially I did not like High On Fire because I was too into Sleep and just didn't like the new direction, but eventually I came around. As much as I like Sleep, I can understand why Matt Pike might have taken High On Fire in this direction. Everything he does will be compared to Sleep, at some point or another, so instead of trying to duplicate Sleep, or doing something similar which everyone would compare the the original anyways, just take things in a new direction. Besides, these days there are many bands that do the Sleep-sounding thing.

I just call it metal or rock, but I think its referred to as doom or stoner rock as well.
