The Australian citizenship test - if you can understand this joke and piss youself laughing, you are ready to be an Australian......
A cocky is in his ute in the outback. He sees a smelly old swaggy at the side of the road and decides to give him a ride. The cocky stops, and yells out the window do ya want a ride mate, to which the swaggy says piss off, you can open your own gates! |

Looks like you have those assholes there as well..... one of those 'cockys' wives parked on the path and left the handbrake off the ute the other day outside the school and it rolled for about 50 metres while we all watched and crashed into a tree..just missed an old man by inches..and all she was worried about was the paint job... ...... |

Haha. Few observations... Is "cocky" one of those jerky people that are all mouth mouth mouth? Also what is an ute?
Cheers! |

Australia Day is the aniversary of the British "first fleet" arriving in Sydney Cove in 1788. This is the date that is regarded as the begining of the entity which is now known as Australia. It's basically marking the day that the British arrived, stuck a Union flag in the ground and declared "This land belongs to His Majesty" (which I think may have been George III?). It's basically the same celebration as your 4th of July, except we never had to fight to gain our independence (so we don't have an Independence Day).... It's like a "Foundation Day". It's also known as "Invasion Day" to some indigenous groups.
Basically it's a public holiday which many use as an excuse to wear the flag as a cape*, get drunk and have a BBQ.
*A person participating in this practice is referred to as "Captain Australia". |

Hmmm... I'm not sure what Laurie is refering to as a "Cocky", here in my part of Aus that's a type of Parrot... Maybe it means something different in Queensland, colloquial language does vary in Australia.... or maybe I'm just not Australian enough to know!!
A ute is a utility vehicle, a bit like what Americans call a "pick-up". I can't remember what they are called in Britain. |

Ahhh... well that makes sense then. I did not know that was another use for Cocky... does this mean that my Australian citizenship will be revoked? |

There is actually a bit of coverage here about australia day..at the moment there is a article on the radio about irish convicts who were transported to oz in the 18th and 19th centuries... |

How would you feel about a straight citizenship swap then? I'm rather partial to Ireland and the joys of the cold (Seriously, I'm not being sarcastic - I like the cold)
You may not like South Australia (where I'm from) Franzoni, it's the only Australian state that never had convicts... only free settlers. We have a very German/English Heritage but virtually no Irish... |

Us irish are great wanderers..maybe i could be the first... as for the cold ..your welcome to it bro'.... ...just don't tell anyone we have kellys somewhere in the family tree....
Not to go too OT..but an interesting fact about the convicts that came up in the programme earlier was ..after some of these convicts had served their sentences..they were allowed to stake a claim and ended up as settlers and landowners..something that they probably wouldn't of been able to do in their country of origin....!
i have a cousin who emigrated to oz a couple of years back i think she is in Perth but might be moving to Melbourne..her fiance is australian so i reckon she is there for the long haul...hopefully at some stage in the future i'll make it there for a long holiday...a country i've always wanted to see as all there was on the TV when i was younger was ..the sullivans, neighbours, the paul hogan show,...now we have ..water rats, home and away, neighbours(still going..!) and a few more that i can't remember... |
