Hello, All.

I'm new to this forum, but I don't know where else to turn. I've looked everywhere for a manual for my effect, but I can't find one.

I have a BOSS RDD-10 Digital Delay box, half-rack size. In my opinion, it sounds very nice.

However, I have several questions about the rear-panel level switch. It's a push-button switch that is labeled -20dBm / -10dBm. (That is, it's -10dBm when depressed, and -20dBm when released.)

Ok, here goes ...

1) Does anyone know whether this switch attenuates only input level, only output level, or both?

2) What is the purpose, or 'intent' of this switch? (I understand the FUNCTION of the switch. That is, I think I know WHAT it does. I want to know WHY it does it.)

3) I use this box in two situations: With a Strat > Compressor > RDD-10 > Fender Hot Rod DeVille. And with a Taylor 814CE LTD > Compressor > RDD-10 > PA system. The Taylor has Fishman electronics, w/ high output, I think. (Nominal is listed/rated in the manual at -12dBv) I have to raise the compressor threshold and then turn up compressor volume level when I plug in the Taylor. But, I still want to hit the front of my HRDvl as hard as possible when I play the Strat. But, I don't want to clip/distort the RDD-10. I don't mind pushing the button whenever I change guitars. So ... which setting should I use?

Sorry for the long post.

ANY HELP, INPUT, THOUGHTS, OR COMMENTS ARE VERY WELCOME ... !!!

(Also, does anyone know where I might find a manual for this device? I've searched your site, and couldn't find it here.)

Thanks again in advance ...

Tom

Hi TomB

Welcome to the forum from Australia.

Is your question not covered in the RDD-10 manual?

Hi TomB and welcome!

(Dr. Bob, I think TomB needs a copy of the manual...)

That can be pretty confusing, but here's the deal:
It's the input level, I use mine in my amps fx loop on -10dB, whereas -20dB would be perfect for instrument level, ie. a guitar plugged into it.

-10dB is closer to 0dB than -20dB, therefore it means it can handle a higher (line level) signal than the -20dB setting (instrument level).

I can see why this can be confusing cause it works the other way around on most bass amps where you have a passive (0dB input) and an active (-10dB) input.

You should be using it on the -20dB setting when inline with a normal output guitar and on -10dB with high output pickups/line signal.

I'd like to thank everyone who replied to this post and to apologize for my delay in replying. 4th-of-July over here ... I'd read the replies, but hadn't had time to try and implement them.

Ok, having said that ...

1) Thanks for the Welcome, Dr. Bob. And ...

2) As Laurie correctly guessed, I don't have a manual. I was given the RDD-10 as a gift from a fellow guitarist, but he didn't have the manual. So, again, if anyone knows where I could get one, print or electronic, that would be helpful!

3) Thanks, Dirk, for the input to issue at hand. I've now had time to try your suggestions, and your grasp of the situation seems to be accurate. And it IS confusing, for the reason you mention. Typically, the 'padded' input will be labeled with the DECREASE in the device's gain, rather than with the relative level(s) of the source(s). I was able to find a couple manuals for other BOSS products that do different things, but that have this same switch, (RGE-10 Graphic EQ and RCL-10 Compressor/Limiter), and the function of the switch as described in those manuals corresponds with and confirms your advice. I've tried it and it works.

Also, for anyone that might care about this, it appears to me that the RDD-10 hits whatever comes after it at about the same level, no matter what I do. So it makes sense for me to ALWAYS use -20dB because it is quieter AND I CAN AVOID CLIPPING THE RDD-10 SIMPLY BY ATTENUATING THE OUTPUT FROM THE COMPRESSOR!!! Then I just adjust the gain of whatever animal (amp, PA, effect, what-have-you) follows the RDD-10. Because IT seems to clip well before anything else does. And that 'digital' clipping is UGLY!!

This might be useful to anyone who uses a compressor directly prior to any BOSS device that has this 'Level' switch.

Ok, too long.

Thanks again, everyone. You've been lifesavers! ....

Tom
