Are there any differences between these two soundwise? Or is the difference just that you can control OD-2R with an extra footswitch? |

| I have OD-2, and as far as I know the only difference is the footswitch ability. |

What about the OD-2 not having any IC's, not sure about the OD-2R, this one may have IC's who knows?
Talking about this IC issue, the FZ-3 does also not contain any IC's now the difference in sound between this one and the FZ-2 is huge. Feel the FZ-3 is more organic, whereas the FZ-2, you press is on and the sound is there, less dynamic than the FZ-3. |

I A-B'd these two today and was unable to hear any difference whatsoever. The OD-2 is a MIJ pedal and the 'R' is a rather new MIT version. I opened them both up and the PCB layout looks fairly identical with no IC's in sight.
I dialled in the exact same settings on both pedals (level=2, tone=6, drive=9, turbo=on). The R is a little loader so I had to reduce the level to about 1.5. From then on I could not hear it when I pressed down on the pedals to change which one was on. I tried with a few other settings as well but apart from the slight volume difference they just sound the same.
I've A-B'd my two OD-1s earlier and there I could hear a difference even though both pedals were close to eachother in production. I was really surpised to hear the 2 OD-2s sounding exactly the same. |

Potentiometer tolerances can explain the volume difference. They suck.

Component tolerances used to suck even more in the past compared to now. Resistors usually had 10-20% tolerance, capacitors had as much as 50% tolerance. Transistor gains used to really vary a lot, and for germanium transistors they still do.

| According to the Boss book the difference is an increased turbo-mode, due to public demand. |

Thanks for the comparison Bossarea, great to know that those two models are more or less the same |

I compared my OD-1 (version D) and OD-2 MIJ and really found a huge difference. The OD-1 is much clearer and less muddy, and on with singlecoil pickups much more responsive to subtle picking nuances and overtones. OD-2 is of course capable of a more overdriven sound, but the more overdrive the fuzzier the sound gets.
OD-1 walks all over OD-2 in my opinion... |

visserman, youre all over this forum lately...
I think however I saw the OD-1 name on this thread earlier and figured it would be interesting to compare OD-1 and OD-2 since the Boss book says the OD-2 in non-turbo mode should sound like OD-1, and since were talking about ODs here...
Perhaps a little off place, perhaps not... Cheers anyway...

Sunburst, you are right there, the more comparisions made between particular models the better, and of course, since the OD-1 is part of the family of overdrives it is a good idea to A/B them with the OD-2.
I get this feeling that the OD-1 sounds like the Ibanez TS-9, gosh there are so many pedals which go for a similar feel and idea. Seen an OD-1 on Ebay UK, price is not good, and there are many many different versions of them out there, which makes me feel: "Not at the moment Sir".
Good price for an OD-1 would be around 25,- which is about $50,- but I think I am dreaming there................... So let us have some more of this in the meantime |

With the average price on Ebay UK being around 40, the old and rare ones tend to go for a bit more. I guess an OD-1 will set you back around 50-55 while an OD-2 should be around the 40.
I tracked every Boss pedal being sold on Ebay UK during 2002/2003 in an Excel sheet and calculated average prices for each one. Unfortunately I lost the whole spreadsheet when I forgot to back it up before I erased the disk |

Interesting these pricefluctations on Ebay, makes you look at buying pedals in a different way.
We get a bit of topic now but.........It seems that people are willing to bid higher on pedals with a clear picture. Also seems the case that pedals in a box with instructions get higher bids |

| I just picked up a MIT OD-2r for $40. I don't know if I'll keep it, though, if it sounds identical to my MIJ OD-2. |

Why not keep it if it sounds just as good? You have the added option of the turbo footswitch. |
