the extreme's of clean and cranked gain are VERY nice, open, unmuffled, 'transparent'
but...
with a standard overdrive setting, when you leave a chord hanging and the volume fades out you can hear the gain trying to clamp onto the fading signal and sputtering as it does it. i'm pretty sure this doesn't happen with a stock pedal.
so i guess i'm either going to try and fully restore it, or maybe try putting just one of the components back in and see if that works.
any idea what exactly D6 and D7 are doing? so maybe i can have an educated guess to just add one of them back to board and try that.
i obviously don't want to risk frying the pedal or my other pedals if that would be an issue? |

Hi gambit Welcome to the forum from Australia.
Which specific OD-3 mod are you referring to? And what type of diodes did you use to replace D6/D7?
According to the hand drawn/traced schematic I have off the net. D6/D7 are a pair of back to back, 1N4001 general purpose 1 Amp rectifying diodes. In the feedback path of FET Q15, a 2SK184-GR.

cheers guys, great welcome
the mod was to remove the parts in the D6 and D7 positions. i don't really know a diode from a resistor so that's a bit useless.. but here's a pic from the original mod page:

so, yeah, i just unsoldered those two black parts and removed them. i still have them and will probably put them back in unless anyone can give me options on what to replace them with, or if reinstalling just 1 of them might get me the benefits of the increased dynamic range and lose the sputtering gain-fade-out? |

| Well I tried that particular mod on my OD-3 some time ago and I thought it was useless, completely ruined the sound of the pedal to my ears. I think that the mod is designed to 'open up' the OD-3 which is quite a compressed sounding pedal. What it does is add some nasty unwanted distortion to my ears. I am actually not sure that it is possible to 'open up' the OD-3 as it's quite a complex pedal with various gain and clipping stages making up its sound. You may be better getting hold of an SD-1 cheap and trying that as it is much simpler pedal. I am no expert though so see what others have to say as there are definitely a few gurus around here. |
