Hi, just bought an mt-2 off ebay and it appears to have some modification. Does anybody recognise the label 'es FTWR since 1995' 3 position switch mounted on side of case, and what does it do??? thanx |

G'day and welcome!
Don't recognise the name... but I know a lot about how an MT-2 should look. If you could post pics of the inside of the pedal - the back of the switch, the wiring, and the circuit board, I can take a guess at what is going on. |

The label 'es FTWR since 1995' is from es footwear, since 1995. I believe it has something to do with skaters clothes but i am not sure about that. |

Hi guys, thanks for the welcome and info, will now post photos of internals. tried pedal the 3 positions on the switch are as follows; pos 1 & 2 seem to be the same, bright sound , pos 3 seems muted, lower output. As for the stickers seems some dude wanted a bit of street cred.

So these are fairly standard mods.
The "oscillator" caps have been pulled - this cleans up the mids. THis is a good mod.
The clipping diodes are what is being switched - looks like you can choose between LEDs or Germanium diodes (the factory diodes are silicone). THis is also a good mod.
And it looks like some of the tone path caps have been upgraded and/or increased in value to "open up" the pedal a bit - makes it clearer. Also a good mod.
The mods look a little bit "agricultural", but it looks basically sound.
I reckon you got a good deal.

Looks like it is the Sustainia tri-gain mod from MA.

Funny enough, C6, C7 and C16 are part of the flip-flop switching system, which don't improve the sound whatsoever. |

Another strange mod: C24 is removed while C25 is upgraded.

If you look closely at the circuit, removing C24 leaves the gyrator completely isolated from the rest of the MT-2 circuit.
Subsequently, upgrading C25 doesn't have any effect in the sound, you are only waisting a nice Phillips capacitor.
I would remove C25 and upgrade C24, as other mods do. |

According to Monte Allums removing c24 gives better mids and upgrading c25 to a .01uF capacitor gives better upper mids. |

I've seen mods that call for this too. COMPLETE waste of time to do anything with C25 once C24 is removed.
Once C24 is gone, you could actually scavenge Q8, C25, R34, R36, and R37. They wouldn't be electrically active in the circuit.

If you remove C25 there is still path to ground for C24 via R34 and R37.
In combination with C22, R30 and the opamp 4b, this is still a voltage amplifier and you can control its frequency response by changing C24.
It's not a gyrator but still an active circuit similar to the one found in DS-1 or SD-1.
If you remove C24, changing C25 doesn't do anything, even if Monte claims otherwise, it is practically impossible.
As Laurie mentioned, the gyrator around Q8 is not connected to the signal path anymore.

Hi Jonno,
This IS the Sustaina Tri-Gain Mod from Monte Allums. I've done it at least a dozen times for customers. |
