| Well, I'm going to buy a Boss CE-2, I've already decided that. But what I'm not sure about is whether there is a chip difference between the silver screw black label MIJ and the black screw black label MIJ, I'm already aware of the differences between the silver screw and the green labels from both japan and taiwan. And, if there is a difference then what sets the black screw black label japan apart from the green label japan, chip-wise of course. Any help is appreciated! Thank you so much. |

Can't tell you about chip differences, but I've been through ten or so CE-2s in the past few months, from silver screws through Taiwan versions.
None are bad, but my preference are the black label w/long dash era. I wouldn't pay extra for the silver screw, but I would try to stick in that date range.
As I said, none are bad, but they do sound a little different.
Later versions appeared to have more clarity at the expense of a little warmth.
Could just be parts aging. |

| thanks for the warm welcome guys. but some of what i was referring to had to do with the 4558 chip. now i know theres the jrc4558 chip, but i thought that the original, and better one was the one manufactured by nec which somewhere ive heard is only in the silver screw, while jrc is in the later ones. And, for that reason im puzzled as to why so many people regard the jrc version so highly I thought that was a repro. I may be totally offbase, but again would appreciate any help. |

You might find out faster if you post in the mods and tech forum, your question will get noticed quicker by the modding guys who know these things. |

| Actually I think I found my answer. But still the one remaining question are the nec 4558s better than the jrc4558s ? |

Hi Ronster, tehfunk & Guys
I was busy playing with my appreciating collection of CE-2's
Yes some do sound a little bit different, best guess is, as Alex in law postulated, component aging.
--- Quote, Dr. Bob's other theory --- I have been thinking, that it may even be sightly attributable to some degradation of the internal capacitors, in the actual BBD chip as well. I have been milling over this idea for a while now, I just haven't worked out, how I will attempt to measure it --- end quote ---
I can hear you all saying Dr. Bob's been spending too much time alone again.
tehfunk, if you can, test the CE-2 before, you commit to buying it. you won't be disappointed, Unless you have some preconception of what they might sound like.
Myself, I just buy any CE-2 I can afford, MIT, MIJ, green or black label, silver screw or black plastic, & in any condition. Yes, some are more valued than others by collectors, but in the end they all do sound great.
If you want richer & deeper look for a Arion SCH-1 chorus - not the modern reissue SCH-Z, they look identical, but the word has gotten out on these as well.
Hope this was of some help
Regards Dr. Bob 1956 - B |

I had an SCH-1 earlier this year, and they present such a dilemma! Their sound quality is inversely proportional to their build quality.
If only their circuit designer had worked for Boss... |
