Can somebody say anything regarding the "optimal op-amp discussion" to the above mentioned one in my used Boss SD-1 dated February 1984 (board no. 2291042803)? Particulary in relation to the well known JRC4558D and RC4558 - what are the differences compared to the "famous ones"? Please refer to the attached picture. Thanks for your opinions.

Hi Biboplar, welcome to the forum from Phillytown! I think that's a Panasonic low noise Hi Fi op amp. My Ibanez Fat Cat also has a similar, JRC5534. The 4558 series are a little noisier and have less headroom. Some people think that's better for guitar distortion. I always thought SD-1's only had the 4558, interesting!!! Dr. Bob and Laurie may have seen this before. |

G'day and welcome!
The 4558 is generally considered "better". One school of thought is that the 4558 handles clipping in a more benign manner.
All the SD-1's I've seen have had the 4558. Do you know if the pedal has been repaired at some point? |

Sorry, that is Mitsu! How does it sound?... From my experience the 84 and reissue TS9's w/ Toshiba TA75558's sound crystaline on the top end. That is also a Hi Fi op amp and the Tube Screamers so equipped can be used as a mike pre in a pinch! |

Hi biboplar Welcome to the forum from Australia.
That's the first SD-1 I have seen with a 5218 opamp. I will have to keep more of an eye out, next time someone brings one to the Lab for some R&R.
Regards Dr. Bob |

Welcome biboplar!
A little off topic, but I have put a chip socket in one of my SD-1s and tried different op-amps. The op-amp have not a huge part in the sound of course, but I really like Burr-Brown OPAxxxx (forgot the right number) and JRC4558D. Op-amps are cheap, even the Burr-Brown, and its a funny way of tailoring the voice of a pedal without too much soldering.

Hi Laurie, as far as I can see, the pedal was not repaired. It seems to be the original chip.
