Hi! I have my ds-1 modded to a keeley ultra.my question is does the opamp have any effect on the sound?Mine has a TA type serial and its made in taiwan, any suggestions or advices? my friend suggested a jrc 4558 type of IC.Im looking for a warm distortion that is not to harsh mine's a bit brittle and when the dist knobs goes to full it sounds fuzzy and has a lot of hisses.I have seen a lot in this forum changes in the IC's of the Ds-1 from time to time. Thanks and cheers! |

Putting in a 4558L will change the tone. What you think of the change, however, will be up to your ears...

swapping back to the original DS-1 Toshiba TA7136AP op amp will make it sound more organic.
that's my favorite of the DS-1 versions. the current one is the thinnest sounding but has more boost than the 2 op amps that happened before it.
changing it to a 4558 type will decrease the gain by a significant margin but increase its "bite." |

If you mod a DS-1 try to use an old as possible, even MIT from up in 19994 has the right ones. And those MITs are often cheap on the market. By the way, I have since a couple of years a Stinkfoot modded DS-1 and I really love that pedal, its more an overdrive than a distortion.

Laurie: changing the tone is also what I'm after in the change of op amp chips of the boss ds-1 and then modding it, because the stock one does not suit the sound I need and its way to trebly when it gets to 12 o clock and lower than that its way more bassier.I saw a you tube video of an ultra mod ds-1 and i like the sound though i can't seem to find that sound in my ds-1 even it is already modded so my hunch is the change of op amp will be the only solution. Thanks!
zentropa:
thanks man.the jrc4558 is now out of the window for me that's for sure,I got the wrong idea. I don't want to decrease the gain. I wanted to add more gain that will add some punch to the pedal.DS-1 op amps seems to change every year the reason I'm asking whats the best op amp for the ds-1.
Goran:
The ds-1 I have is an old one its a heavily used pedal i assume..I dont know when it was made, the color is already faded and i have no idea if some parts are replaced the only clue i have is the op amp.
I'll tell you guys soon whats the op amp serial number i dont have the pedal yet right now its still in the hands of my friend who's finishing modding the pedal. Thanks for the replies! |

One thing to remember with mods on new DS-1 is the optimization of R39 and R40. There is the diode D8 too.
These 3 components were not present in older DS-1s and they do have a significant effect on the sound. Just swapping op-amps may not achieve the desirable effects on its own. |

MIT one's are usually cheap. The most expensive one ive seen was $50. |

Hi everybody, MIJ STOCK (NO MOD)DS-1 with TA7136AP was one of the best DS-1 I have heard...In my opinion it doesnt need any mod and tone is excelent ( for me)
But...
You can try using a IC Socket in order to test with severals Line in Opamps like BA728N or NJM3404, or a RC4558L. I have a really nice Marshall tone on a DS-1, I changed Opamp to RC4558L and use a combination of Germanium and Silicon Diodes with others components changes ( Thank You CCSTSIM )
Let your hear guide to find your desirable tone, but you need to have a reference tone or sound color in order to known what is the right mod for you... Dont expect to obtain for example a Bluesy sound from DS-1 with Keeley Mod... |
