I have just ordered the Van Amps Sole-Mate reverb. It uses a real Accutronics Type 8 tank which should sound a bit more lush than a Type 4 which is what Fender uses in its amps. It isn't tube driven like the following products, but it sounds very nice in the video below & is highly rated.. so it should be a great low profile unit for a cool $300.
My 2nd choice was the vintage reissue Fender '63 tube reverb that runs $500, its a smart lookin' unit. (FYI, the other players are the Guyatone for $500 & the Soldano Space Box that includes a vibrato for $600.)
I almost happy with the TC Electronic Nova Reverb. Even though its one of the best digital reverb effects in small format that I could find, it still isn't lush enough. I don't think I need 18 choices. Plate is one of my favorite types but a good spring is hard to beat. The NR-1 will probably go back for credit. I did like the stereo in/outs & the ability to dial in each verb with all the knobs though.

Defrag, Im glad for your sake, a good spring reverb is like playing with angels. I had a Fender Reverb unit for a couple of years, and this was something completely amazing compared to 99% of the build in reverbs of amps. I traded it for a hollowbody Gretsch Electromatic. But guess if I regret that. So, Defrag, we want a report if you reach heaven or not

I bought a Danelectro Spring King yesterday for about US $50, couldnt resist This is really a horrible reverb compared to the Fender stand alone unit. It sounds so bad compared to most on-board reverbs that I didnt believe my ears So stay away from this one, all digital reverbs I ve heard sounds better, even the one in Boss FDR-1.

Gah! Tks for the update. Maybe you can pawn it off onto an indigent... its not heavy enough for a boat anchor. I'm convinced that a decent stand-alone verb unit runs about $250 analog or digi. |

Hi Goran & guys
Sorry you new Danelectro Spring King, was/is so disappointing.
Does it use a real spring reverb unit? if it does, how many springs are in it 1-2-3? or is it a folded Z type single long spring?
Can you possibly upload some pics of the insides & the Spring reverb. I have hread some really bad reverbs that only use a single spring, or the folded Z type units.
I actually own a few folded Z units reverb tanks, & they only really sound sort of ok, when used in a home stereo setup, with a a dry-wet mix control.
The best type are the 9 inch 3 spring types, as used by Marshall & some other amp makers, & or course my favorite the Acutronics 16 inch reverb tanks, like Fender uses, in their vintage amps.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Doc: It looks like a real spring reverb. Kinda gimicky with the kick-pad. Strange, if it has a real spring or two inside, why would it "need" a kickpad to get the crashing sound? Just soccer the whole thing with your foot. I'd like to hear the Reel Echo unit though.

Accutronics Type 1 is for small practice amps. Type 4 is what Fender typically uses in their moderate sized amps. Type 8 comes in the Van Amps Sole-Mate unit & should sound great. Type 9 I could only see that Soldano Space Box uses it but there must be others.. its gotta be lush.
Goran: Yeah sorry too. But hey, for $50 I would have tried it out as well! |

Dr Bob: Still dont have a decent digital camera Im still using my old (then) expensive analog Pentax.
There are 3 springs (about 20 cm long) in the Danelectro, so its really a spring reverb. Not Z-springs. The main problem is that they are so short. You CAN get a usable surf reverb out of it, but I dont play surf music that much..
I dont regret the buy, $50 is not much; I suspected that I should be bad. But its a funny pedal and really lo-fi, nice looking too. But as I have experience from the Fender unit, and this is a fantastic reverb, but way too expensive.

Hi Goran
You are right, it is a very nice looking simple & plain case.
You could take out all the guts & turn it into a Surf Spring Overdrive.
Or just resell it on evilbay.
