| Ok then, so the SD1(Japan made) comes with diffrent chips. I know about the JCR4558D chip that is "famous". What are the other chips they used. I don't like the JCR in anything(not even TS9's). A friend had one with a diffrent chip and it sounded amazing. Help. |

We could investigate this like the OD-1 discussion. Everyone has a look at their SD-1s and write down all information like chip, writing on PCB, serial, Made in... and hopefulle we'll get a full view of how the pedal has developed over the years.
My own SD-1 is only about 5 years old. I've never opened it up to have a look at its guts but I will when I come home from work today. |

| Both of my MIJ SD1s are still missing in action with some of my other pedals. Hopefully I can find them over the weekend and open them up. Every MIT SD1 I have ever owned has the 4558DD chip. |

I've only ever seen (to my recollection) SD-1 pedals with JRC4558DD circuit in them. Granted, most of the SD-1's I go through are brand new, but I've had a bunch of older ones on the bench too.

| Now that I've thought about it for a while, the MIJ SD1 I modded some time back has the JRC4458D. I'll have to look at the other MIJ I have when I find it. |

I checked my Taiwan made SD-1 yesterday. Another JRC4558DD so nothing special there. I wrote down the ET number on the PCB but sadly I've already misplaced the post-it note I wrote it on. |

| In Boss SD-1 are mainly JRC 4558DD, I have both SD-1 (Japan and Taiwan), Taiwan has 5 numbers on chip, and Japan 4 - it sounds much more better (better bass and treble) and it's more crunchy - good for backlights |

What number is 4 (Japan) or 5 (Taiwan) digits? Is that a separate number from the 4558 designation? If it is then perhaps this number can be used date the chip?
Over on the rathole forum (Matsumoku), one guy traced the number on a switch. It turned out that the switch factory was still operational today and the tiny serial numbers could be used to determine the production date of the switches on 25 year old guitars.
It would be cool if we could find a similar way of dating parts in our Boss pedals. |

| I read on a website once (which I unfortunately have not been able to find again) that explained date coding on op amp chips. I haven't Googled it for some time, but maybe there's one out there somewhere. |

I just bought a MIJ SD-1: Serial: 751100 Chip: JRC4558DD PCB: 2291042803
My MIT (probably made 2003 as I bought it in 2004, it was ordered from Roland Scandinavia): Serial: Oh I I didnt check... Chip: JRC4558DD PCB: 2291742803
The difference in sound is not that big, the MIJ is sligtly fuller, but that could be to that the MIJ is played more.

| If they both have the 4558DD you probably wouldn't hear much difference. If the MIJ SD1 had the 4558D, you would most likely find the MIJ SD1 to be a bit warmer/smoother and full sounding. That's something I have been doing lately: Comparing MIJ pedals against MIT pedals. There has always been a lot of discussion over which is better and I aim to settle the debate. So far, depending on the pedal, the argument doesn't hold much water. That is unless the internal workings of the pedal have changed as with the DS1, which sounds the most different between MIJ and MIT versions. |

I decided to resurrect this topic, just for fun. I opened my MIJ SD-1 and checked the chip. It's a JRC4558DD chip. But when I went to Guitar Center to check out a newer SD-1 it didn't sound the same. The newer one had a tad more gain, and wasn't as warm sounding as my MIJ SD-1. any thought's on why that is would be greatly appreacated. |
