One of the definitive mods is the Keeley "All Seeing Eye" (with Ultra) mod.

there are a lot of mods for ds-1 here. if your looking for heaviness, replace your d4 or d5 or both with 1n4001 diodes. however the heavier your sound is, you also loose some volume. my ds-1 is the 1n4oo1 on d5 with d4 as stock. its similar to the wampler mods although i didnt change the other components.

Hi hot tubes

Welcome to the forum from Australia.

Don't forget about the "Melan Head Mod"
It's in our Mods & Tech section.

Just as a side note, while I was away on business the other week.
I picked up a MIT DS-1.

When I plugged it in, I actually thought that this pedal was modded internally.
But it wasn't.
This has to be one of the Best sounding DS-1 That I have ever heard.
I was gong to use if for a "Melan Head mod", but not after hearing it.

Over the Holidays, I am going to do a closer inspection of the internals,
using the Scope (CRO), & My HP N&D test analyzer.

Hey Laurie & Zen, I wish you could hear this Stock MIT pedal.
And BTW, I wasn't full of or Reds...

Regards Dr. Bob

Hey Dr. Bob, I had that same experience with a second-hand MIT DS-1 not too long ago. I'll open mine up and let you know which op-amp I have.

they still use some similar modded ones (although i believe they are analogman modded ones now), but their tone is highly dependent upon running said pedal through a high gain tube amp at a very high volume.

you won't be able to get that kind of sound without having a similar setup going.

however, if you want a higher gain DS-1, you'll have to beef up the clipping diodes to something that's chunkier than a 1N4148.

the melanhead mod does have a lot more low end than most DS-1 mods, but i believe the clipping section is identical to the SEM. taking that into account, you might want to try duplicating the tone section from the melanhead mod and then experimenting with some heavier diodes in the clipping section (most likely rectifier diodes).

I did the Classic JCM Marshall mod and it sounds really good. Didn't do the extra metal mod, but I'm sure it will be mostly the same character just with more gain.
