I've started this thread on the suggestion of Dr. Bob. This is intended to be a list of the pedals that have been rescued. I'd propose the following definition for a "rescue" pedal:
1) It has been faulty/broken for a long time and has just been sitting in a cupboard somewhere because no one could/would repair it.
2) It faces "certain death"... if the rescue repair hadn't been made, it would have gone permanently to the parts bin or land-fill.
3) The rescue repair is non-trivial (e.g. simple replacement of the battery snap wouldn't qualify.
Here are mine, what are yours?
MT-2. Been underwater, pots ruined, corrosion on component leads and traces. Replaced pots, cleaned up board. Rescued!
MT-2. Pots bent/broken. Traces on pot PCB wrecked by previous repair attempt. Replaced pots, repaired board. Rescued!
DS-2. Pots bent/broken. Wiring cut/broken. Components missing from board. Replaced pots, fixed wiring, replaced components. Rescued!
DD-2. Nothing worked - D6 burned out, traces ruined around D6, wiring broken off from previous failed repair attempts, pedal full of "oil" (guessing from use of WD-40). Fixed everything. Rescued!
DD-3 (V1). Mode switch destroyed, mode switch circuit board missing, cats pee corrision on the board, no sound, then when sound fixed no compression, wiring broken off from previous failed repair attempts. Fixed everything. Rescued!
DD-3 (V3). No output from the main output. Wiring incorrect and bodgy because of previous repair attempt. Finally able to trace the signal to find a SMD opamp blown (not easy as there is no schematic available for this). Replaced opamp, fixed wiring. Rescued!
CE-5 (digital). Protection diode and immediate area fried. Traces and nearby components destroyed. Bodgied up the board - it was essentially unrepairable, but did enough get it back together. Replaced the conponents. Rescued!

I don't really have the skills to fix broken pedals but I think it's cool that you and many others are able to do so. Well done!  |

a few months ago, i bought an sd-1 to replace my od-1 which i had to retire since it would suddenly go pfft if i jolted it. sometimes a stronger jolt would make it work again (kinda like banging the vending machine or tv). i let 2 pro techs check it up but they couldnt pinpoint the fault. one day i checked it up again and when i accidentally pressed the chip in a chip adapter,the thing worked. turned out the problem was a bad solder point in the chip adapter which was done early on when i started learning modding. i examined the solder points and all of them were hazy silver, not shiny. so i redid all the solder joints that i made early on and now the pedal is alive again. to test it, i dropped the pedal from 5 feet to the floor 3 times and it never falters. so now i have a rescued pedal. this is the prodigal od-1 i wrote about before.

I started keeping a list like that. Posted it online, then things escalated - So beware.
I'd say the most pleasing stomp resques were a Locobox Spaceship and a seventies Carlsbro Echo, closely followed by my own DD-2 that this forum helped bring back.

that's an outstanding legacy of rescued effects, Laurie! 
if you were to one day write a book based on pedal repairs (not just Boss, all would be okay), for the benefit of the less adept like myself, you've got at least one customer here. |
