Hi kelmaur
I believe that you and I are the only current members with the rack version of the Candler Tube Driver.
from what I have been able to deduce, as i only have pics of the foot pedal versions.
They are the same electronically, but the Rack version has more sockets on the back for greater flexibility.
The CTD is an op-amp-Tube hybrid design. They use the opamps to drive the tube & to buffer the output of the unit. In a way it's not a true tube design, but gets way more crunch & drive this way. The design otherwise would require two 12AX7's - 3 or 4 stages. (The are 2 Triode stages per tube)
Mesa Boogie, do the same op-amp-Tube Hybrid thing, but with more gain, in their V-Twin & Bottle Rocket pedals.
They even cheat a bit, buy putting orange LEDS behind-under the tubes, to make them look like they glow more.
Do you use your CTD much, or live? And what do you think about it?
Mine is having a long hard earned rest, next to the Mesa 50-50 rack head.
Regards Dr. Bob
