Hey All,
How many pedals chained together do you guys find is too many before your signal starts to get weak?
Since boss makes a case that holds at leat 6 I figure it has to be more than 7 or 8?

I would think part of it is not only how many pedals, but which pedals, how much cable you run (anything over 30feet is supposedly tone robbing, and with cables the shorter the better usually), and what type of pickups you have. Regardless of sound, I just think if you would need more than 10-15 pedals in one setup, you either are in Swervedriver , or really need re-evaluate your pedal needs. That being said, the Visual Sound One Spot supposedly can power up to 20 pedals, I think, if you daisy chain the daisy chains...

There are three different problems with multiple pedal set-ups:

1) Long guitar cables cause "loading" on your guitar's pick-ups, reducing the amount of treble in the signal: Lots of true-bypass pedals connected with lots of patch leads also gives this effect.

This problem can be reduced if you have a "buffered" i.e. non-true-bypass pedal at the start (and maybe end) of the chain - All Boss pedals have a fairly good quality (i.e. "non-tone sucking" bypass).

BUT

2) Lots of buffered pedals in a chain can sometimes lead to extra noise, even when bypassed: This problem occurs more frequently with pedals that have an poor quality, tone-sucking buffer circuit.

I've read posts on this forum, where consensus seems to be that up to 8/10 Boss pedals in a row usually doesn't cause much, if any, noticeable reduction in quality.

3) The more pedals you have in a chain, especially ones with different power supplies, the more likely you are to get hum/noise from "earth loops" and the like...

i use ten boss pedals and a wah these days,the top row bf2,ph2,tr2,dd3x2 are looped through a ls2 so i'm playing through the bottom row of six pedals mostly,but even when i want some mod/delay and i'm going through them all i don't really notice any tone sucking...i have a pod xt pro that i used to use in an effects loop of a marshall just for the mod/delays and it thins out my sound a lot more ..really gone off using processers live..handy for recording though..just pick an amp model and go for it saves messing around with miking amps and annoying family and neighbours at nightime....

I just keep it simple. 3 - 5 pedals in one chain. no problems with tone loss at all. effects loop signal I try to keep under 10ft (s & R) that's about 24 ft total including patch cables on the pedal board.

ALSO, I always put my cabinet in FRONT of me, to my right ( I am usually at stage right) way way better control for feedback, to hear picking nucances and the great and beautiful sound of the cabinet LIVE rather than sent 100 ft to she soundboard and back to a monitor.

Most of the time i use only 4 in my chain.

EQ (does that one count ?) -->BD-2 -->Big Muff -->SD-1 -->valve amp.
(oh with a Micro Amp on stand-by, at gigs)
