Maybe this thread belongs in Non BOSS Gear Discussions, I dunno. But one must admit a peppering of smileys

Amazon comes through! The BOSS Book is really cool to have & even comes with its own CD. Now I can hear what some of the old pedals of days gone by actually sound like. I particularly enjoyed the Distortion Atlas, The Inside Story (interviews pertaining to many of the pedals), & the picture-laden details of parts progression through the ages. Another neat feature is the comparisons between BOSS's main rivals EH & MXR. The overall history of Roland/BOSS was interesting & the Q&A section was informative. I'm sure there are reams of questions you guys would like answered in the next printing.

The publisher could stand an update of course, post 2001 but BOSS doesn't release products often enough perhaps to justify. I would have liked waveforms of all the pedals instead of just the Distortions even if the book was twice as heavy. Although I understand since a DM-2 would sound painfully close to a DM-3, there were glaring omissions from the CD such as the FZ-2, HF-2, & PQ-4 that I was dying to hear. Even considering there are pedal settings included, I longed for more samples than was provided, many of which are provided in the BOSS Guide books. Finally, the index is organized by type; I wish that had included a page by model.

Who exactly is Mr. M as referenced in The Greatest BOSS Collector in the World? I'd say some of you guys could give him a run for his money though, especially BossArea! It was cool to see the PW-2 only saw 9 months of production.. maybe I should grab that NOS gem only 8 miles away after all. Wouldn't it be awesome to own 1 of the 5 production units of the Zakk Wylde SD-1 or ultimately, the GOLDEN TICKET that is the 6,000,000 unit celebration DS-1.

All said, I'm really happy to have this definitive reference on hand. Now I can solidify some of my desires based on the content & auditory pleasures provided. It is well worth the $21. Now I think I'll grab a few more effects books I saw that actually presents information regarding the actual sequence of effects in our chains, the whys, & wherefores. Oddly enough, The BOSS Book didn't seem to touch on this at all. Maybe I'm jumping the gun a bit since I haven't read it from cover to cover yet, only a thorough perusing. Anyway, good f'n book.

I SOOoo.. want the DF-2, DM-3, & VB-2 pedals! They must be minty fresh. Hell, I'd trade federal reserve notes for 'em

yes it is a great book mate 100% agree there. I am planning on doing some recordings with my new multitrack when it comes in, I have a heap of pedals so I may make up a recording and post mp3 of each for download. I think I will try recording through differant amps etc all clean cnannel. I only own Marshall so that will come through I guess as marshall clean still sounds like marshall, but I think I can also go in direct with the recorder I am buying so that may be another option. I had planned on going direct into my laptop, but unfortunatly my dog pissed on it and it wont boot up anymore!!!! Blasted dog, he couldve eaten my homework when I was at school but he wouldnt LOL
Anyway will keep forum posted.
Havent forgot the manual for the RDD-20 either boss area just looking for someone who can scan for me so I can post!!!!
cheers and keep a rockin

Yes, it's definitely a valuable resource. There's a few omissions and a handful of inaccuracies but it contains a lot of information that can't be found anywhere else. It's a book for a narrow audience so I doubt there will be an update anytime soon.

Most who has read the book takes the dates given for each pedal as the production span. The comment about the PW-2 being produced for a period of 9 months shows that this is the wrong assumption to make. It would have been great if the book had the real production start and stop dates listed instead.

ya the Boss book rules. i have no idea about MR M. it said hes relatively famous though. i hope they come out with a new one soon as they the book was made in 2000? i believe and some pedals are missing (MD-2, PH-3, RC-2, AC-3) i love the time line illustration too. and how each pedal has its unique history is neat too.

I'd love to know who the mysterious Mr. M is too!
On some of the photos of his pedals throughout the book, there is a small sticker on the rubber footplate which is supposed to be a young Mr. M but I can't work out who it is.

Anyway, I think Bossarea is on a par with Mr. M as the greatest Boss collector, though I think it's safe to say Mr. M. probably has the largest collection of SP-1's anywhere!

Could anyone do a scan of the distortion grid with all the distortions on, I think it would be a useful resource for the site apart from anything, as on their site boss only have the pedals in productionon theirs.
Thanks

There's probably a copyright issue in doing this Tomwest. It would be good to have on the site but I'm sure Bossarea wouldn't want to get into any trouble!

I would also like to limit the information taken from catalogues and the Boss book. There's already a lot of information taken from those sources.

Another item I'd like to create is the timeline that Stratosphere mentioned. I'm trying to figure out a way I can create something similar without copying the design straight off. Boss has a similar timeline on their page implemented as a Flash application. It's quite good so mine must measure up to that without being a copy.

Got my copy a couple of weeks ago. It's an awesome book! Love the hi-res photos too.

And I'll take another 12 SP-1s, StratoSphere. But the ones that are actually working.

Mr M does seem to be missing quite a few though. You, bossarea, would have the more complete collection it seems.

What goodies did you beg borrow (steal)?
Did you get to see the RC-2? Or any other stuff you can boast to us about.

Did Mr. M buy you lunch and a beer
