The quality of the buffer stage seems to have a profound effect on the tone-sucking qualities of a pedal, I have read that from several sources, and it sounds relevant. The buffer stage is ON even when the pedal is by-passed.
Does the buffer stage differ in Boss pedals, or is it a standard one found in every pedal?
Im not so sure about that, as there are several known tone-suckers, like PSM-5 and TU-2. I also read in a test of the new RE-20 that this pedal had a high quality buffer. I thought of to really test this so I brought out my looper/true bypass-box and connected RE-20, and indeed there was no signal loss at all when listening real closely. Then I did the same thing with PSM-5, and guess what. There was a very noticeable difference in tone quality, a little muffled and less bright than the direct signal. Adding up with a couple of other tone-suckers would not be so good.... But we have EH-2 for that!
