I don't know if this has been done yet but here we go.In the past few months since joining this forum. i have been thinking about every aspect of tone, which i have not been doing for many, many years. Well i have been using Jim Dunlop 3.0mm big stubby picks . i could hold about 5 other peoples picks in my hands. they felt good. and sounded good. I was doing alot of jazz at the time i picked these up.So as we age or musical styles change. so i was thinking about picks. then i came across this article.

Well it made me think about picks. so i switched to Jim Dunlop Tortex .60mm hell of a drop from 3.0mm. they sounded good but i felt like i needed more.So i read the article and came across the ultex picks. And OH MY GOD. the clarity of the notes come out so much. it not funny. I am gonna stay with these picks of awhile. So something as small as a pick can change your tone that much. So what picks do you use? |

| Nice article. I liked those surf picks. I've never seen a wooden pick before. I don't really use picks, I'm a finger guy. But there was a topic a while back about V-picks that was started by Jack I think. I've been thinking about getting one or two that are really thick and have rounded edges to see how closely they sound to fingers. |

| My current favorite is the Red Bear. Easy to grip, like the tone. I have not tried an Ultex yet. |

Dunlop tortex 1.14 purple for guitar. Dunlop nylon 1mm black for bass.
Those nylon picks have a more fingerstyle sound to 'em, instead of the raspy sound some picks have. They also last for months, I used to wear down tortexes like crazy. |

| I used to like Dunlop .73s but now I'm more for Fenders, Stubbys, or my special pick made from a silver coin. I also have Pearse Sarod picks made out of ebony & rosewood that sound very warm. Of course I have metal pics made from stainless-steel, brass, copper, each with their own sound. |

| I had been using Dunlop Tortex .88mm, the regulars and the Sharp model over the past 20 years or so, but have recently changed to V-picks Medium Pointed because they seem to have a Boss Enhancer or BBE Sonic Stomp -like effect on my picking... |

Currently Dunlop Tortex .50mm. Used to use the Dunlop Nylons .60mm all the way down to .38mm I believe. God, I think I'm a fag, you busy tonite??? I have no idea what I was thinking. Do you like whiskers??? Friggin shoot me. It's quite odd how we can nuance ourselves without truly knowing why. Seems like a good idea at the time, looking back you wonder what took you there. I played really LIGHT NYLON FOR YEARS. Now, not so much. PS - not quite sure on my sexual stance yet... be gentle... or really rough!!!

These:

I like the white medium ones - they have a square edge which lets me get a much cleaner, sharper attack than tapered ones. They're very tactile to play with, too, with different edges for different picking responses and sounds. |

I'm about as middle of the road as you can get on picks, I guess. For years I've been using the standard Fender 351 style picks. Medium gauge in ocean turquoise. They feel fine to me, and the color reminds me of the beautiful Gulf of Mexico on a clear day.
Incidentally, when playing electric(mostly lead work) I tend to use one of the more rounded corners instead of the pointy end of the pick...don't know why, just started doing that many years ago thinking my attack would be better(I still think it is to a degree...my playing is another story). When strumming on acoustic I use the pointy end. |

I like different materials..
my favourites are picks carved out of ebony. DIY solution. Warm tone, almost no string noise. They're thick, but light, and you can make them in any inflexible shape you want - like a stubby or a jazzIII.. drill a few small holes in them for grippiness.
I am ashamed and saddened that I vacuumed up my favourite ebony pick - into a very dirty centralvac bag.
My next choice is Dunlop ULTEX - with the rhino on it. They also make a jazzIII in Ultex - it's like a hard rubber, but it has a warm attack as well. LOTS of players I know favour the ultex.. It comes .73 and 1.14, and like I said, the JazzIII. so nice.
I also like Fender celluloid picks - they break and fail, but the tone is nice. Dunlop Tortex is pretty close to that, but much more durable. The Gator Tortex are the nicest - .73 to 1.14 but cut cross-hatches into the pick with a knife (DIMEBAG STYLE!) - great grip and nice pick for heavy playing.

| they make the ultex in a vareity of sizes i an using .60mm it think i goes .60,.73,.88,1.0,1.14 so much clearer of a tone. i was thinking that the hardness of the pick would make it sound bright at first, but actually it the clearness of the note. i reccomend just trying out a set. it's only about 5 dollars for a set of 6 in the stores. i picked up a set off ebay for 3 dollars and free shipping |

| I really like the big triangular Gibson, heavy. I always had problems with the pick rotating in my hand, the triangular ones rotate but there is always a new playable side turning up. And the fatter the pick, the fatter the tone. |
