I have just purchased a BOSS CH-1. I think it is a great pedal but I have a horrible feeling I have a problem with it already!
I run it through the front of my amp, Marshall JVM 410H, and whenever the pedal is in the chain (pedal on or off) it really boosts my signal creating an awful hiss. This is unberable at higher gain settings. I use quality Planet Waves sheilded cables. In terms of experimenting to find the fault I have plugged it in solo (removing it from my pedal board without running other pedals) straight into the amp and have tried powering through the AC adaptor and batteries.
I'm at a wits end and hope the fault can be rectified. Any ideas to a solution other than returning it for another?
Many Thanks |

G'day rjboodell1 and welcome!
What channel on the amp are you usuing? If it is one of the high gain channels, you will get at least some hiss from any modulation pedal. Does it hiss/boost on the "clean" channel?

Hi rjboodell1
Welcome to the forum from Australia.
Do you have other pedals i the chain with the CH-1? Have you tried on another amp/friends amp?

To answer both of your questions... Yes the pedal gives off the awful hiss noise through all channels including the Clean. Even when run on it's own I get this problem. I have tried plugging it in through the FX loop as well as the front panel and still the same.
I use an MXR EVH Phase 90, but this goes into the front of the amp, I have also taken this out of the equation and tested with just the chorus... still hiss!!!! I am looking into sending it back to give another CH-1 pedal a whirl incase this is at fault.
My main concern is that the hiss is there even with the pedal deactivated. The hiss only ceases once pedal is removed from the amp completely. Is it true Marshalls and Boss's don't mix? I have a JVM 410H if that helps you diagnose the issue. |

Marshalls and Boss pedals are fine together - many of us have them. I've had a CH-1 doing the split to my pair of JCM600 amps for ages with no noise.
If it is new, it might just be a dud... Try another one and if it is the same, that would point toward it being something in your rig.

Sounds like the pedal may have a problem. The only time I had a noise problem (white noise ) was because of the ac adaptor I was using. ( the ac adaptor was a non boss product ) I have used many boss pedals with Marshal, Fender, Peavey, Hartke, and never had a compatibility problem with boss and amps. either going inline or using a loop. |
