Hi,
I'm looking for some advice. My SD-2 has a bad hum in the lead channel,it's there if you have a guitar plugged in or not.The hum becomes really bad when the "level" knob is turned past the 9 o'clock position and makes it virtually unusable.Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers
Gazz

Do you get the hum using a battery in the pedal?

/"Hey, Doc, it hurts when I do this..."

edit: You're getting the hum in your signal path either in the vicinity of the pedal, or it's somewhere else and the pedal is amplifying it.

First try a battery -- if the hum is still there, then it probably isn't the pedal or the adapter.

If the hum disappears, then try another AC adapter that is compatible with the pedal. Wall warts are not the most rigorously designed power supplies in existence; typically you've got little more than a transformer to step down line voltage, some rectification to convert the transformer output to DC, and then mabye a capacitor input to smooth out any remaining AC ripple. You could have a poorly designed AC adapter, or it may have lost its capacitor filtering or some or all of its rectification (depending in whether they put half-wave or full-wave rectification in).

Also, many (I'm not sure if all) Boss pedals have some internal AC adapter input line conditioning, possibly a Zener diode to clamp the input voltage to 9V and also some capacitor DC filtering. If you get the hum no matter which AC adapter you try, you might have something injured here.
