That's kind of dumb that they didn't specify that.
Unless -- they're leaving it open for you to experiment. Many distortion pedal modifications involve diode substitutions, and some even involve using different diodes to get asymmetric clipping that I guess is supposed to be more tube-like.
Some recommendations would be:
Silicon: 1N4001, 1N4148
Germanium: 1N34A, 1N270
You can even use an LED, like one of those common jumbo red ones, for a diode. I think that you'll illuminate them with your playing if the signal voltage biases them appropriately (but if they're sealed inside the pedal case it's not going to amount to anything).
You can make one of the diodes silicon and the other germanium, or one silicon and the other an LED. Or I have even seen a germanium diode in series with a silicon diode for one and just a silicon diode for the other. Or you could make them both either silicon or germanium.
You should be able to arrive at a selection that sounds right to you with some experimentation.
