i have just bought a ds 1 s/crew serial 9300.
i have noted in the past that i do not like this pedal.
the first one i had buzzed too much.
i just couldnt get rid of the buzz.
then i got a mij one and though that one was better(the buzz can be
controlled by reducing the tone pot) , the sound of
that pedal was/is too compressed. The serial of that unit is
297800.
Now i have acquired the silver screw version and it has a tone which
i can actually use. Awesome. Sounds like the plexi. Smoooth. Very
transperant.
I have also noted that the newer Mij black screw version ( serial
number 297800 ) has a slight difference on the board in that it
has ceramic caps which are much smaller than the silver screw
version. These are located above q4 and they are marked " b471"
where as the ss ones are marked " j 471"
Both the pedals im talking about have the same chip but to my ears
sound quite different.(TA7136AP)
In my experience the older ss pedals are more awesome.
I just noticed all the poly caps are a different brand on the older
ss version...Im talking about the green ones...the newer pedal
has the lighter green ones that have a metal casing underneath
a green plastic cover...and the s/screw ones have the dark green
plastic " blob" look.
Theres the culprit right there i reckon.

This is very interesting, I have had the same feeling but have not thought about differences in component quality. I have always liked my early SS DS-1 (transparent switch) a lot, I also bought a newer black screw MIJ to “save” the vintage one. But I´ve noticed that the SS sounds better, not a huge difference but i´s there. I´ve always thought that the difference is due to component tolerances or good/bad aging of the components.

for what its worth, the so inferred " inferior" poly caps
mentioned by me in my opening post in this thread were the ones that
monte allums replaces in his ge7 kit, and which the replacement of
has a profound effect on the tone of that ge7.
He mentions them in the instructions as being cheap/inferior.
Further, the ge6 which i recently purchased is definately superior
to the standard ge7 mij that i had.
The reason i mention the ge6 is that it has the same
" good" sounding " blob" dark green poly caps all over the board.
you can see those caps in the pictures bossarea kindly posted for me
in a recent thread. |

ive just pulled my s/screw pedals apart and sure enough
all the good old boss pedals which i maintain sound better
than the new versions all have those " blob" dark green
poly caps.
(ph 1 , od 1 14 pin , ge 6 , ce 2 , ds 1)
the newer versions of those pedals dont.
they have different ones with a light green transperant sheath
over them and then even newer ones have the same metal canister
bipolar cap and no green sheath.
I have this pedal called an ad80 ibanez delay which eats every other
delay pedal ive ever heard and it also has those dark green " blob"
poly caps. |

Hi svengali
OFF TOPIC.
Can you please check, whatever application you are cutting & pasting you text from. It seems to be double spacing all your recent posts. or perhaps it's a CR after the LF (Carriage Return, Line Feed)

I recently opened up my BS July 1981 to compare to the MIJ DS-1 pics in the internal pics thread and I noticed that mine has an extra component at D9. My SS January 1980 has the same extra component.
On a side note what would a component at D1 need to be replaced for? My BS version may have been tampered with. |
