If you click on the distortion grid, notice how there isn't really any pedal that fits in the lower-left quadrant with a natural/rough sound.

Also, for anyone who has this book, the distortion grid featured in it does not match the one on the Boss website. Anybody know what this is about?

They only included the current models on this grid apparently.

I really liked the classic pedals page(note sarcasm intended); didn't even include the DM-2...need a little love for other pedals ya know.

Hi mountain2012 and welcome to the forum.

I've never liked that grid anyway. It's a bit subjective whether a dist sounds rough/smooth/metallic/natural. I think a better test would be to use a spectrum analyzer and break down the distorted signal into its sinus components and compare the pedals that way.

yeah i don't find the sd-1 to be very smooth or natural
