hello

its true that modding is so addictive about my DS1, im planning to replace the D3 and D2 of my boss ds1, and also the d6 and d7 is it safe? and what would be the effect in my sound? I already replaced the D4 and D5 to a germanium and led and i liked it hehehhe just experimenting sounds that can be made by DS1

Hi macOy

I think you really need to get a copy of the schematic, to understand what you are doing-modding.
http://www.freeinfosociety.com/electronics/schempage.php?cat=1

Only D4 and D5 have anything to do with the clipping-distortion.

The other diodes are there for correct circuit operation.

But in the end, it's your DS-1.

Modding is addictive, but not good for the pcb and constant resoldering. My poor Wah has a few jumper wires from constant modding, soo many jumper wires holding it together.
As a suggestion, get a breadboard and solder small wires for each diode.
Run them to the breadboard and swap out different diodes or jfets.
Or if you can, get sockets installed in the pcb and do away with the breadboard.

good luck

Sockets are probably a better plan if you decide sometime in the future you want to try a different sound... For diodes and such you can take a normal x-pin DIP or SIP socket and carefully cut one or two of the sockets off and solder them in place of the part you plan on testing...

Just don't blow out your eardrums while modding by forgetting (or just being to lazy) to turn off the amp and power supply to the pedal before pulling parts from the sockets or making other changes...

Just be sure the diodes you are replacing are in the sound chain and not part of the switching logic...

I think we have all been there, it's just some of us are too embarrassed to say so.

macOy

If I can suggest?
Make friends with someone that can read schematics, & doesn't mind spending some time teaching you a little bit about electronics.
It will really make a difference, Not to mention, that you will gain a better understanding of wheat you are modding & why it makes a difference.
Maybe even save you the embarrassment of trashing a pedal.
