Hi. I recently received a nice, lightly used PS-3 with box/manual. It has the pink label and dates to Dec. '94. It's a nice sounding pedal with several usable shifting modes. Right now my favorite is mode 8, which gives a nice Cocteau Twins detuned sound. Not quite as nice as what Robin Guthrie produced with the Lexicon 480L and Eventide H3000, but still pretty lush and ethereal. Mode 11 (EXP) is pretty nice too. It compares favorably to the Whammy, I own a WH-1. I don't think the PS-3 really replaces the Whammy if that is a sound you love, but it hangs in there and could substitute in a pinch. The WH-1 might have slightly better tracking and a little warmer, more liquid sound.
I have a question for other PS-3 users. I mostly own older MIJ Boss pedals and this is the first early MIT delay unit I have owned. I do own a DD-7. I notice that when activating the PS-3, the effect seems to apply fairly instantly, but bypassing the effect again seems to either cut the sound very briefly or dropping it in level slightly as to give that perception. My question - is this pretty much normal operation? I don't think my switch is bad since it seems to work fine otherwise and the pedal was pretty lightly used. My DD-7 doesn't seem to do this but I am also pretty sure the dry path is fully analog. I think that perhaps the PS-3 has a digital dry path while the effect is on. Any thoughts on this will be much appreciated. I shall try to post a picture soon. |

I had two RV-3 pedals with 2000ms delay, and they 'hesitated' when engaged. I suspect, the PS-3 has a similar delay circuit in that it also has 2000ms. I suspect that was in issue and/or limitation at that time. I also had a PS-3, and it sounded very similar (delay tone) to the RV-3.
My 2 cents. |
