| So the local music store had one NOS for US$200, so I couldn't help myself. GREAT clean channel. Made in China, but I really like the tone through my Marshall 4x12. |

Hi Laurie & Guys
These are a pretty good sounding amps, I was lucky enough to play one last night, over at a friends place(Justin's).
I just used my Blackie, & his Strat fitted with Richie Kotzen pickups.
The clean channel is a killer, but the drive channel needs some work. It more like a slightly muffled crunch, perhaps the map needs to be run hard to make this channel shine? But it was a bit too late in the evening when We were giving it some singing space.
I know that there are many mods for the drive channel, the Soldano SLO mod (emulation) is the most recommended.
By the way, did you notice how touchy the volume knob is? It seems to have nothing between off & whow-way-too-loud!!!! One of the mods addresses this problem as well.
My friend will be doing the SLO mod to his in the near future. Until then, he is driving the dirt channel with a DS-1 set as a booster, Drive set low, Level set mid to high.
Regards Dr. Bob |

Hi Dr. Bob!
Well, I've had the V33H for a day now and played the heck out of it. I've noticed all the things you mentioned, but I've also noticed somethng else. The dirt channel is unusable, so accepting that it's really only a clean amp (I could do the mods I know, but would rather not have to) I've been doing A-B tests against my 76 Bassman head.
The Bassman is a little "grainier" like you might expect, but overall it isn't a million miles away from the sound of the V33H. Plus the Bassman is 100W so has a heap more headroom. Certainly, the V33H is a good sounding amp, but I'm seriously thinking about taking it back and just using the Bassman.
The need to mod the V33H plus the reliability issues I've read in some reviews make me think the $200 is better spent on something else.....
Would value opinions about this |
