I noticed they are hard to find, even on Ebay i didn't find any for sale and only one in the finished auctions this year, i wonder if that's because no one wants to sell or are they just rare?
Anyway i did buy one yesterday at a ad-site locally and expect it to arrive tomorrow. Don't know what to expect, what does it sound like? |

Congrats Mesjoggah
The SD-2 is a highly regarded pedal. There aare quite a few members, here on the forum that own them, myself included.
If you look back, there are a few threads already here on the SD-2.
Yes they can be very difficult to locate. And then sometimes, 2 or 3 will pop up in the same week/month.
Did you get it with Box & Manual? And do you know what sort of condition it's in?

i have one. it took a while to track it down. prices seem to flux a bit on it. i paid $68 shippped for mine and 3 days later a $40 BIN popped up on ebay.
i don't expect to sell mine ever as i like it and it would be a pain to replace.
i would put it in the 2nd tier of rarity along the lines of the HM-3, FZ-3, XT-2, etc. as it's not the most rare nor the most valuable but it can take a while to find em.
on a few pedals i believe the lack of an inflated value often keeps people from trying to get rid of them. |

I have one, and I like it a lot ! It's not in very good conditions, there are some chips on the chassis and some scratches, but it works perfectly. I use it with a F.S. to change between the modes, som I have two pedals in one, really great. Now I'm trying to find an original box for it... Enjoy and get fun with your new pedal Mesjoggah !

Hi Dr. Bob,
I'm not sure if the manual is included, but the original box was on the ad- picture so i guess it will be there, the seller said he had seldom used it and it should be in mint condition! i paid approx. $47 for it, shipping included
When i got it i'll post some pics.
oh yeah, i also won a HM-3 on ebay!! Yeeeehaaa) |

Nice one Mesjoggah
I've got 2 of 'em - one boxed & one not - I can't remember where I got them from - just know I've had them a while. Great sounding overdrive pedal - one of the best Boss ODs imho and very useful with the remote switch. I'd recommend it.

Hi Mesjoggah, I believe you're right on both counts - hard to find & it's a great pedal (noone wants to sell them). Laurie's post on his SD-2 actually inspired me to get one & I'm glad I did. Thank you again Laurie. That and my XT-2 are probably my 2 fave Boss OD/Distortion pedals. If you got it w/box & it's in good condition, that is one smokin deal. I'm guessing you'll like yours as much as I like mine. Good find!!!

I got it too, SD-2 in crunch mode is the best Boss OD in my opinion. The lead mode is good too, but the crunch really shines. I suppose it didnīt sell that many items as the price was quiet high, so if you have one keep it!

I have one and itīs my favourite OD-pedal. The Crunch is very transparent and the lead has enough gain to match all others out there. In my opinion. Lead have a nice bottom too without losing the edge or brilliance. I like it a lot. |

Interesting observation about why people sell or do not sell their pedals.
Personally I feel nothing is rare, you can find anything anytime really. True, VB2, SP1, SG1 may be less common, and often they are expansive.
Why do you see so many DS1īs on Ebay? Are these rare? Do they go for a high price?
With DS1īs it is often hard to spot the older ones, so you really need to check carefully.

visser:
there's several scenarios that dictate supply/demand/price on ebay when it comes to pedals. i find most pedals can be categorized.
1. entry level budget pedals. low price point. readily available. usually have a versatile non-specialized sound. the DS-1 and SD-1 fall into this category. they aren't worth much, but don't cost much new either. this is often the first pedal someone buys. the ones sold are usually people who quit guitar, people looking for something more specialized, or people who've found it obsolete with a rig upgrade.
if you remember when the DOD Grunge pedal launched, it was $149 MSRP w/ $99 discount retail in like 1993. later, when it became the flagship DOD distortion pedal it ended up with a $29 discount retail. it wasn't a common used pedal before that point. after that point, they're a dime a dozen and it replaced the supra distortion as the easiest to find used cheap DOD distortion.
2. industry standard pedals. these pedals aren't necessarily the cheapest, but they are the most widely known and readily available pedals. these are generally the upper-level price point pedals since the exponential boom of people learning to play guitar started in the mid-90's. while they may have had a high price point, their used value is significantly lower. basically, these are pedals bought by people when they progressed beyond the beginner stage and they are often replaced by upgrades or tone chasing. the BD-2 and MT-2 are probably the most notable in this style since they have been in standard production for quite a while now. the HM-2 and MIJ PH-2/BF-2 /GE-7 have not inflated yet because they were of this category with long production periods.
3. rare, collector pedals. these aren't necessarily the best sounding pedals, but they are usually considered to be the rarest pedals. often with short production spans and usually produced long ago, these pedals have inflated value from a supply/demand standpoint. they may be of a style that doesn't exist in any other form, but rarely are they commonly used pedals so the motivation for wanting them is often their rarity. the SG-1, SP-1, VB-2, etc. are of this style. these are often the most highly valued and their price tag reflects it. there's no shortage of these pedals being sold since people always need money and they will fetch a substantial amount. the DF-2, PQ-3/4, PN-2, MZ-2, etc. are of this style as well.
4. heralded pedals. these are always pedals that are out of production but when people ask "what's the best boss <insert effect>?" these are the pedals that get name dropped. it often takes a long time for a pedal to reach this kind of lore and often the pedal's value is slightly higher than it would be if there was a better alternative. there's usually no shortage of these pedals out there but they fetch moderately high prices. CE-2, OD-1, DM-2/DM-3, CS-2, etc.
these next three categories sort of meld together... as it takes time to dictate which category they will fall into. often someone famous swoops in and causes a shift between categories.
5. forgotten pedals. these are pedals that no one really liked very much when they came out and usually were overshadowed by something else. these pedals may be very cheap or may be moderately expensive depending upon how rare/old they are. the older they get, the harder it is to track them down. stuff like the PW-2, OD-2, OD-3, HM-3, CE-3, DSD-2 (it's priced well below its new price), etc. fall into this category. the DN-2, FZ-5, MD-2 etc. will be this soon.
6. under the radar pedals. these pedals are similar to forgotten pedals in that they didn't receive much fanfare or sales when they launched. the difference is, over time people have discovered these pedals to be something special and they are getting more and more sought after. the SD-2, XT-2, DS-2 are here.
7. best available version. this refers to the best sounding (or simply MIJ status) version of a given effect. they don't necessarily sound better than other pedals nor are they particularly heralded but they do hold the distinction that for a given effect, this is the pedal you want. these aren't good enough to be heralded but hold a mild balance of collectability and performance keeping its used value high. the RV-2 and DD-2 are key examples of this.
quote: Personally I feel nothing is rare, you can find anything anytime really
in regards to this, it's not really all that true. there are effects that cannot be located within 7 days on the internet or the one out there holds some comical price in someone's ebay store waiting for a sucker. i've found you can almost always find pedals that clear over $175 on average, but it's the pedals that will sell for more like $40-60 that are often the harder ones to track down as there's less motivation for someone to simply get rid of it if it doesn't bring em a decent chunk.
it may take 3 weeks to find an HM-3 on ebay sometimes, but when one does pop up, it usually clears between $25-35. i feel if the HM-3 was worth $100 there'd be a lot more of em on ebay. |
