Hi Guys

I know I am probably opening up a BIG can of worms.....

But, When we talk about the much loved OD-1
which version are we actually talking about?

I know Pacafeliz did a picture comparison in:
http://www.bossarea.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2851

Which actually is the better sounding one?
The more sought after one?
Has anyone actually used or owned both?

The 14 Pin RD3403 version, or
The 8 Pin JRC 4558 version

Is there really a difference?
Which would you personally prefer?
Which version do you own?

And has anyone found or won the schematic for the 14 Pin RC3403 version?

Is there a clone of either version on any of the effect building sites

We talk so much, about the sound & tone of the JRC4558D but the RC3403 never seems to get a mention.

Regards Dr. Bob
(now holding a BIG can of worms)

Anyone selling a 14pin, who owns a 14pin, or maybe once heard a 14pin at some legendary jam session in 1984 will tell you it's superior. Analog Mike of Analogman fame is on the record endorsing the 14pin as having better tone: http://www.analogman.com/od1.htm though incidentally he's also trying to sell a 'mod to big chip' mod for your later OD-1 for $70, so his view is in a way no less biased than an owner/seller of a 14pin. Aside from less bass cut I'm not sure exactly how tonally different they are to later versions.

Not sure about DIY, but Thundertomate had a pedal called the TaxiDriver that was alleged to be a OD-1A clone. From the clips it sounded much nicer than the real OD-1s I've tried. I think the guy who made them retired for more fruitful pursuits though...

Yes, I got a paper copy that Roland sent me 1983. I was really annoyed at the time because it didn't match my OD-1 with a 4558.

Haven't ever tried the 14-legged version. I keep uhnting for one but they're usually outside my budget whenever I come across them.

Hi Bossarea

You don't seem to have the appropriate EmotiCon-Smiley for:
Begging on one Knee...

I have the later black screw, black switch model but can still dial in a great overdriven sound. I find I need to back off the amp gain and set the overdrive at 12 O'Clock max and the level to suit. If the amp gain is too high it can sound muddy.
It certainly cuts thru the mix and maybe it hasn't the bass of the earlier 14 pin one but those are the frequencies that are swallowed up when playing with drums and Bass guitar.

I've got both 8 pin and 14 pin models. I tried them on an A / B test and the 14 pin definitely sounds better to my ears. It gives me a much more valve-like tone and response.

Check this beauty out:
http://cgi.ebay.de/Vintage-BOSS-OD-1-early-14-pin-chip-Best-Version-od1_W0QQitemZ330162722718QQihZ014

I have a 14-pinner but it's the NEC chip, not the Raytheon as featured above.
Has anyone compared the two types? I don't know if mine is earlier or later as there's no serial, I'm guessing it's a little later when they ran out of Raytheon chips.

Thanks for the link:
"Some early ones (1978) used an NEC uPC4741C quad op amp instead"

As OD-1s have been around since 1977 it looks like NEC chips weren't in the first batches. Makes mine a 1978+
Maybe just a case of which chips were available at the time rather than any sonic/economic reasons for the change?
