Yesterday I stumbled on a thing I never thought about, I´m sorry if this already has been up on the forum… and this is only interesting for collectors…
The background is that I bought a Silver screw DS-1, serial 7600, with a black switch. Of course this is unlikely original and I looked inside, sure, I could see that the switch was soldered after manufacturing, the soldering was sloppy. I also have a silver screw TW-1, serial 9900 (Oct 1980), with a transparent switch, this is very late for a transparent switch. So I always thought this was put in after manufacturing. My idea was to switch switches between the two pedals to get both more original. By the way, the TW-1 doesn´t work. I started to do the switching and noticed that it would not work, there are differences between the holes for the respective switches:
Transparent swich: 10,8 x 14,5 mm Black switch: 14,1 x 14,1 mm
So a black switch won’t fit a chassis made for a transparent switch, and vice versa. And the transparent in TW-1 must be original, October 1980 is very late for a transparent! And sure, to get the black switch in the DS-1 the “operator” had filed the hole larger.
I have black switch pedals with lower number than the TW-1. So I think that Boss used black and transparent switches parallel for quite a long time, longer than I have thought anyway. This is due to the fact they had made chassis for the transparent and had in the warehouse, that must use transparent. This alongside with production of chassis for black switches. We don´t know why Boss switched switches , I have thought that the transparent ones went out of production. But it could also be that the transparent quality was not good enough. I have had several transparent switches that have been operating sporadically, very few blacks. Yes I know, the transparent ones are older and of course have been used more. Well, it´s a good theory…
Anybody else that have late transparent-switch-pedals?

I'll check mine when I get home - but I thought my PH-1r had the transparent switch, and it's a Feb-1981 - I could well be wrong though.
I have 4 silver screws, (oldest to newest) the CS-1, TW-1, PH-1r and BF-2.

Surprised to hear that you have a 9900 with a transp. switch. Most pedals was made with black switches from around 8500 and that's more than a year before 9900.
From an earlier discussion I new that there was problems fitting a black switch where an original transp. switch had been but I didn't know that the size diffference was that big. |

Don´t take my measures for 100% right, but there is a big difference, you can see it easy with your eyes. |
