Some A/B tests between a Jap. and a Taiwan pedal.
This is my first A/B test in this field I have done so far, and guess what? The Taiwanese one has more bass, is overal more smoother than the Jap.
Okay it is very very subtle, and when you do not do the comparison you will not notice that any of the two sucks. No, none of them really sounds bad, but the Taiwanese one definitly sounds better to my ears.
Of course I am fully aware that I could try the same A/B tests among a few Taiwanese ones and you would still get all different results, but I guess this just makes me feel that the whole Jap/Taiwan issue is relative, and it really depends on which pedal you are dealing with.
Perhaps the biggest differences will be in the DS-1 since there have been many changes in this pedal over the years, not really sure if this has been the case with the OC-2.
Once I had my first OC-2 I felt really good about this pedal, souded good and liked the feel, so that is another point, you just feel when a pedal is good or not, and usually it is an instinctive feeling.
I guess when we would all sit in one room and listen to the various comparisions some of us would hear certain things while others would not, and also some people like more treble while some others prefer bass.
In the case of the OC-2 I like bass, as this makes your sound fatter, my Jap is a little bit more trebly, but you would only notice it when you know what the other one sounds like, so really, not all that big a difference.
Right hope some of you can do some A/B tests, oh just use all the same cables eh when you are connecting things up?, as this does sometimes also make a difference, so try to go for testsituation where all variables are similar: CAbles, adaptors, batteries, gtr. amp ect.
Right, now let us have some fun and see what you can come up with.
Oh do not have any serial numbers here, will post them later, the Taiwan pedal does no longer have a label, but I can give some info about the batt. compartment and the Tnumbers, but again, will do this later.
Cheers.

Thanks for that report. The OC-2 was produced in Taiwan from the late 80s and up until the OC-3 was released so there may even be differences to be found between different Taiwan models.
I pressed the buy it now button on a MIJ DS-1 yesterday so I'm looking forward to do the DS-1 comparison as soon as I receive it. |

Great Bossarea, now for some reason I tend to think that most of you guys all do have Japanese and Taiwanese pedals, and have done all the A/B tests, but from what you tell me there it seems that you still have some milage to travel as well with regards to that matter.
Okay looking forward to hear more about your testresults, have fun in the meantime and enjoy. |

| the DD-3 I have sounds awful, compared to my DD-5 or DD-6. It is a later model, and I know I've opened it up before to tell you what it is, but I can't remember what the PCB said, I'll do it again soon, but yeah I hate the DD-3 I have. |

| The MIJ/MIT SD1 is an A/B test that I did quite a while back. The Japanese version is much warmer and natural sounding. I've found that the Taiwain versions are a little "fizzy". That having been said, I should add that after the A/B test, I now have no stock MIT SD1s in my collection. |

It is good to hear different opinions about this subject, I can see that some Japs will sound warmer, but not all Taiwanese pedals will be the same as well. You could easily test 10 DS-1's and find that about 4 of them really have a great sound............still do not think that many of us will be doing these kind of tests.
It would be nice to have a weekend where we could all meet and run through different pedals and listen and talk, but I guess that is the subject of another topic: The annual Bossweekend!!! |
