Hi again- well, after searching for the perfect overdrive sound, I came across an OD-1. I was able to pick it up for under $100, and it sounds great! When I get it home I had to take it apart, of of course . Here's what I found:

OD-1 version 1d
PCP stamp: 052-281d
Serial: 0500 (stamped)
Black switch, black screw
Chip: MC4558CP1

Looking through previous posts, I hadn't noticed this chip listed as one of the ones found in these units, so I wanted to post. It certainly looks original- does not look like any work was done on the inside of this pedal at all. Interesting stuff!

Oh, and the "O" in OD-1 is under the "r".

Cool, thanks for the info.
I'll update the OD-1 page shortly.

Jallen do you have a Ibanez TS-9 or a TS808? Just wondering how these compare to your OD-1?

If you do not have any of these overdrives can you compare it to some of your other overdrives? How does the sound differ? Sounds like you have a good one there, but how does it relate to other pedals you know?
Cheers.

No, I do not have a TS-9 or 808. I had mainly used amp distortion through the years, with a SD-1 as a boost (it rules for this). However, I have switched to a Fender amp that I run fairly clean so i needed a pedal to supply my overdrive. I had been using the SD-1 (MIT) and recently picked up a DS-1 (also MIT). I liked the SD-1 a lot, but it was not perfect so I was searching for another unit- I had recently posted about opinions of the OD-3 as an option. Finding the OD-1 was a nice accident. I called a local dealer to ask if they had an OD-2 or -3 in stock, and he said "no, but I have a beat up OD-1 if you want that."

So I can A/B the OD-1 directly against the SD-1 or DS-1. Obviously, the DS-1 is a different animal in many ways, so the SD-1 is a better comparison. I find the OD-1 to have a bigger, fuller sound. I had rolled the SD-1 tone back quite a bit as my guitar aand amp provide enough treble(I play a Strat Plus w/ Gold lace sensor pickups). To be honest, I was worried that the lack of a tone control would be a problem, but it isn't. The OD-1 sound is warm and full enough that you don't need to roll back any "buzz" from it. I have never played a MIJ SD-1, so that may be a different story, but I am very happy with my OD-1 sound.

Truly, I didn't pay any more for it than I did to get the two MIT SD-1 and DS-1, and it is a lot better. Of course, now I'm wondering if all the older MIJ pedals are better (is a CE-2 in my future? a PH-1?). I had honestly thought that the MIJ thing was overrated with these pedals- I was wrong.

Great to hear your story on this matter Jallen, I think the Japan issue makes most of us here curious about which one is better or not. I do have some Japs, but have not been able to do A/B tests yet........

Great price for an OD1! Congratulations on that one.

In regards to the OD1 vs TS808 or TS9, the amount of available gain or drive is far less on the OD1 in my experience. Where the TS9 could almost border on distortion rather than overdrive, the OD1 isn't in the ballpark at all. Of course it's all a matter of personal preference and what type of music you're playing, but I love all three of these pedals for different reasons and applications.

I have used a DS-1 MIJ for some time now, but ever since I got my OD-1 it replaced my DS-1 on the pedalboard pretty fast. The sound of the OD-1 is indeed fuller, and more responsive to picking nuances. Havent compared it against the TS 808, or TS-9 but that would be interesting some day.
