my 10 year old ps-3 which i used primarily for double-lead guitar parts (judas priest, maiden, thin lizzy) died. it would light up when plugged in but would turn off after 10 seconds and would not sound anymore, effected or normal. when i brought it to be serviced to an authorized boss service center, he asked me if somebody had already tried to fix it. i said no and he said the board had already been serviced before since there were solder marks. i said it was the first time it was brought for servicing since i bought it brand new. anyway, since the IC needed wasn't available in my country and would have to be ordered from japan and would be expensive, i decided just to let it die and save up to buy a new harmonist or ps-5. i felt bad tho since i bought the ps-3 from an authorized dealer distributor and they gave me a unit which i discovered 10 years later to be not completely brand new. i used the case now to house a beta aivin overdrive to make it look more like a boss. (SEE my post in off-topic about beta aivin)

I'm surprised that Boss would sell refurbed units. It could of course also be the store you bought it from that decided to sell a used pedal as brand new. |

thanks guys. when i bought the pedal it really looked new with all the paperwork, even the smell of the new pedal, but the components were the ones that were refurbished. of course after 10 years, the warranty is long gone. next time i'm going to bring a screwdriver and open up a pedal after i pay for it then, if i find something wrong i could still return it. hope nobody gets the same experience as i did. my faith in boss is still strong though as it might be a store problem. my next pedal is still going to be a boss. |

The may be an innocent explanation... and then again, I may be out to lunch.
What if this pedal failed quality assurance at the factory and was kicked off the production line to the assess-then-repair crew? (assuming they have one). This could result in a factory new pedal with soldering marks - the soldering marks are from the factory itself replacing components that were defective "out of the box".
Not sure if this is how Boss operate (they might just chuck them away if they fail on the production line), but I've seen it before in industrial electronics manufacturing.
Laurie.
