Someone just posted a new thread titled above & I was replying to it when it was deleted. So, here it is again; a decent topic as any.

'What if Boss had a custom shop where we modders & tinkerers could custom order pedals..' or some topic intro like that.

My response:

That's a great idea. They could simplify design by offering some basic modules that we could choose from & 2 different levels of quality components, regular & high tolerance. Circuit design is similar to programming where you write a routine that does X & one that does Y.. then you hook 'em together. Like basic I/O, filter & amplifier sections, feedback circuits, etc. All modular. Quite obviously, offer the compact & twin form factors.

I'm not sure Boss would be ready to support the level of interaction & support necessary to see the idea come to fruition. It would be a neat experiment on their part.. not unlike the SG-1, eh?

Now that so much is done digitally it would probably be possible to do this without to much factory customization. A PCB could be made for 5 different feedback circuits and choosing one of them would be a matter of programming an eprom instead of changing components.

Or how about something like Ferrari's "Classiche" program?

Before you ask... NO, I don't own a ferrari! I saw it on the Speed channel

Thinking more about this... would an old Boss pedal that had been completely resprayed and re silk-screened and the components (like old/failing electrolytic capacitors) replaced still be "an old Boss pedal"?

I suppose it'd be much like having an old strat or something with all new components.. the value is decreased for the collector market, but its functional ability is restored/improved. Good to play, not so good for resale.

I think that would be awesome. To make the process a bit more accessible, they could offer some sort of scoring system for the customer (i.e. "How much gain do you want, on a scale of 1 to 10?") and have "de-coder" back at the factory that correlates the proper components/resistance/circuit etc to the score. So if you said you wanted "6" gain, that would correspond to circuit/component A. Then you can obviously choose color, paint, etc.

I think the hang-ups would be numerous though. I think Boss would have to limit it to a certain effect, like overdrive/distortion/fuzz....otherwise it would probably be next to untenable. It also wouldn't be cheap :(

Cool idea. I would definitely pay a premium price for premium components because I don't know how to do it myself.

Maybe even custom silk-screened names like Right Foot's XT-2.

Ah, the fantasy lives in the idea of my dreams.

sorry defrag, i was the one who posted it and since it nobody had opened or replied to it in one day, i thought nobody was interested in it so i erased it. i was thinking more about the lines of having options for overdrive or distortion like different opamps or silicone or germanium diodes, or increased tolerances for the components. i also said boss could get input from the members of this forum regarding what options to offer. one could send back an old pedal or order a new one with his desired options.i got my idea from some guitar companies like fender and gibsons custom shop. i like modding but theres also that joy of opening a box and enjoying the contents without thinking about what it lacks or should be improved. of course theres always a price for all the options.

Excellent idea leonard d rock. Kudos. Hopefully someday Boss will listen to us, offer more than just another od/dist or multi-effect, and allow us to select the quality/options of our Boss pedal components. But then that would take all the fun away from the modders wouldn't it.

Heya, thanks for chiming in Leonard! I couldn't remember who had orginally posted the topic to give proper cred. Its a decent topic, I just didn't know it was up for a whole day. Have patience man! I hope I worded the topic alright to capture your original thought. I literally submitted my response & the Board said the topic didn't exist anymore, d'oh!

your welcome defrag, yes you wrote it the way i intended it to be read. another thought about it is that we buy new but modded pedals from keeley or analogman, or send a new one to be modded, why not get it modded from boss itself. a great player could also order his custom model of a pedal and make it available to the public as a signature model like the digitech clapton pedal or the fender clapton strat. of course, if one wants to mod it himself, he can still do it.there are lots of new unsold and used pedals available. knowing the guys on this forum, somebody would still mod an already customized pedal.
