Anyone know of a US-source to find a 1u rack for a project? I built the AMZ Overdrive Pro and SansAmp GT-2 clones and would like to put both in one rack unit - along with a preset booster (15dB). The AMZ has 6 pots and two toggles - the GT2 clone was modded to add a mid pot (along with the bass and treble) and saturation pot. The total for the two combined is 5 toggle switches and eleven pots. I have the two combined to one - using a mile of wiring and midi jacks to connect between the PCBs and a master footswitch. This allows me to toggle between the two effects, remotely trip one of the toggles (diode switch on the OD), kick in an added booster. LEDs are set to show master on/off, which effect is on, boost status and diode status.
I thought about a couple of stomp boxes but they are rather large and I would be tapping two or three footswitches and flipping a toggle. Also, I would rather have the rack unit to go with my rackmount tuner and power unit (and other rack toys).
Any suggestions for a cheap rack?
Looking around, I have seen a few for the $100 range - it would be cheaper to find an old power unit and use this but then I would have the extra holes drilled into the unit. |

My bad - I used a very misleading title for the forum. I am looking for a box to install PCBs in. Something that is rack-mountable. I have two rack cases and 3 open slots so I want to add this to one of my racks.
Basically - a Hammond box with rack ears. |

Good rack housings are pricey - cheapest 1U I know of is about 30 but it's not up to much. You can easily double that for a quality unit. Don't know about the US, but here in the UK I use Farnell, and sometimes RS.
A cheaper option is to buy just a rack panel - usually they're black or plain steel/alu, they're pre-drilled for mounting, and they're affordable - I got a 1/2U for about 3 I think, and a 6U for 26. You could then bolt a regular enclosure on the rear. |

Nathanscribe,
I like the idea. The blank panel would give a fresh start and let me add all labeling. The enclosure is the issue...had a thought of going to a used computer store or second-hand shop and getting an old piece of rack-mount networking gear and cleaning out the internals. The blank panel would be a good retrofit and give all of the flexibility I need. |

Hi claskowski
I was thinking of doing a similar project but wasn't 100% how to do it basically with a CE-2 and a BF-2 ...sort of a stereo chorus/flanger but wasn't sure to strip it all out and make it work maybe in the future if i can expand my electrical knowledge... ....anyway i was looking for the same thing as you and i found it in some US sites but it was a while back might of been digikey or try some of the companies that deal in industial servers...
this link is to a site we have in Ireland and the UK but i think it's the sort of thing your looking for...

I used to work in construction and when we were refitting out offices we would come across a lot of stuff being thrown out even some old industrial computer stuff with units like this..worth keeping an eye out and you might be able to salvage a box from the local recycling place and just put a blank panel on the front and redrill it to suit your own project...

| If the blank panel didn't supply enough room, try a 1RU shelf. Lowell MFG (lowellmfg.com) has stuff like that. I believe that MBT makes a shelf with a "security cover" that's basically a lid for the shelf. It's just another idea for you to toy with. |
