I currently have a CE-3 that I did a couple mods to so it would be more like a CE-3. I have a couple questions about the IC's though:

1. I know a straight swap of IC in the CE-3 for the IC in CE-2 is not possible. I noticed that legs 1 and 5 are switched. If I put some sort of jumper to connect the certain legs to the correct position, would I be able to use the MN3007 (CE-2) instead of the MN3207 in the CE-3?

2. If I did this, would I have to swap the IC4 for a MN3101 (CE-2) also?

3. Would just swapping the stock chips with newer/higher-quality ones make a difference other than just being easier?

4. Q7 on the CE-3 is not on the CE-2. If I am able to swap the IC's, would Q7 have to be removed?

Sorry for all the questions. Hope they make sense too. Thank you!!

Why do you want to swap the chips? You can get a pcb for CE-2 from www.tonepad.com BTW CE-3 and CE-2 are almost the same, except the ic chips and values of two or three components.
Cheers

The BBD ICs used in the CE-2 and the CE-3 have different connection requirements, so can't be swapped directly without also modifying some other components. Note the supply connections, and the connection through pins 7&8 via a 56K resistor to ground/+ve.

Also, look at the modulation oscillator. The LFO in the CE-3 has an extra resistor and cap around the 1st part of the op-amp (but note also the pin numbers are different as the halves of the dual IC are swapped with those in CE-2).

The CE-3 sounds a bit rough in mono, whereas the CE-2 is smooth - but in stereo, I think the CE-3 comes into its own and can sound quite lush. Personally, I'd leave it alone, but I'd still be interested to hear the results.

Ahh, ok,it does seem a bit more complicated than expected. Would swapping out the IC's (3 and 4) for higher quality ones be a nice upgrade? I found that Visual Sound makes some of the same type that work with the CE-3. Would the VS ones be considered higher quality?
