Hi y'all - just a piece of advice needed from anyone with superior electrical knowledge than me (not difficult)
I have a mz2 with a bust level pot - anyone know where to get a replacement and how hard it is to replace ??
Also i have an old cube 40 amp stashed in my loft that i bust out last week - its very crackly on almost all the controls and both channel inputs and pretty poor - need to wiggle them to get a constant signal then tiptoe away and hope it stays. I was thinking of spraying it with an electrical contact cleaner but read somewhere that sometimes this can make them worse ???
I know i used the maplin contact cleaner on my old marlin sidewinder and the 3 pots froze solid so dont want to make THAT mistake again.
Any advice greatly appreciated - remember please that im a bit of a novice and have only swapped pickups and pots on guitars in the past so the simpler the better !!! |

Hi fragsie
Email the guys at SmallBear electronics in the USA They will have something they will recommend, & these guys really know their stuff.
You may find that the stuff they recommend is available in your country.
Send them a detailed description of what you want to do, & let them also know that the stuff Maplin sold you didn't work & what & why. Also tell them that you are reluctant, after what happened after your bad experience with the Maplin product.
It's difficult to recommend anything, as I am not fully aware of that is available, in your country.
I have used one of the Electrolube switch and contact cleaners, that is imported from England, but I can't remember the exact Stuff. I use a product from a company called CRC.
The best stuff is no longer available, because it might have caused some people to pass out, after inhaling its fumes.

I've got Maplins contact cleaner, it seems safe enough. Maybe you sprayed a little too much in there and literally froze the pots solid? Contact cleaner is an ice-cold spray because of the contents & pressure, if you've ever sprayed your fingers by mistake you'll know. I'm surprised the pots didn't work after returning to room temp though. Maybe the pot contacts are 'off the rails'? By that I mean the knob has been turned too far at some time and the circular metal contacts inside have jammed, they could maybe be fixed if you take them apart.

| You might want to try Rapid Electronics for a replacement pot. They've got some 16mm pots with splined shafts. Roland will have them but Rapid will probably be cheaper. Can't remember the value of the MZ-2 pots but the schematic can be found on godiksennet or freeinfosociety. |

Thought I was able to help as I have a gutted ds-1 on hand and send you the pot for free. I already used the 100K pot from the Level in my crybaby, and still have another 100k pot. When i dug it out, turned out its a 100KB linear pot from the Tone knob. The MZ-2 lvl takes a 100KA...audio heres a link to the MZ-2 schems if you don't have them. http://www.godiksennet.com/default.asp?main=Schematics
good luck
