I suppose this topic has been up before, but this is one that can be discussed a lot of times. Name a few overdrives, fuzzes or distortions that are favourites that youve owned/own or have heard/tried. Boss or non-Boss.
Overdrives: Vox Big Ben Overdrive Boss BD-2 Analog Man Boss SD-2 Ibanez Tube Screamer TS-5/7/808/9, modded for more bass and less mids
Distortions: Boss ML-2 EHX Big Muff SS Boss DS-1
Fuzzes: MI Audio Neo Fuzz Hartman BC108 Fuzz Monsterpiece NPN-Fuzz

Tried most of the boss ones over the years,at the moment the HM-2 has been a bit of an eye opener and i think will be going on the pedalboard for a while alongside my Seymour Duncan Twin Tube overdrive....the Dod FX 55 overdrive plus was also pretty good for a low gain type overdrive and one i would grab again if i saw one around going cheap..only thing about Dod pedals is that i find the background noise a bit much off them even in Bypass compared to Boss and other brands...the MXR micro amp was also a good one but it's more of a booster than a overdrive... |

I never been much into overdrive, but in the distortion part i like: EHX Big Muff (without doubt the best distortion i have played) Boss DS-1 (Taiwan, good for mainstream rock and stuff, never played Japan)
I don't got any guitar fuzzes but on bass this thing rocks: MXR El Grande bass fuzz
Tried it a few months ago, really cool pedal but it is expensive and after thinking and trying much I bought myself a ME-50B... But maybe i will pick it up also later. |

Tech 21 Double Drive
Gives me everything I need from an overdrive/distortion box. Tech 21 no longer make them. They do a Double Drive 3X (basically a 3 channel programmable version of the original small stomp box). |

Blackstar HT-Distx, sounds brilliant even with very low gain, a versatile rock distortion
Marshall Shredmaster, probably a bit overrated (Greenwood) but is a great 'natural' sounding distortion, has a lot more grit than my overdrive pedal.
Boss OD-3, used either :
No dive Tone as bright as it gets
Drive at 11oclock Tone at 11oclock (This can also be used with the Blackstar for pushing crunchy rhythms into fat leads) |

I managed to pick up a vintage MXR Distortion+ a couple of months ago. Wonderful smooth distortion. I actually like 80's rock, so it sounds great to my ear
Partial to the Green Russian Big Muff too. Damn fine pedal for heavy.
Of course, I wouldn't be me unless I put in a plug for my Stormchaser MOSFET modded MT-2. I know it's emotional, but it's still the one that stays on the board when all other pass by... |

| The Fulltone OCD (ver. 3 or 4)is the best pedal i've ever heard infront of a good clean tube amp(has the sag of an overdriven amp)...and my good ole RAT from 1986...just like the one Laurie picked up...is magical infront of an already overdriven amp....close in 3rd place in the Zvex BOR...this discussion doesn't include fuzz boxes right?...if so then the JH FuzzFace lays waste to them all...period |

OD-2R (Thanks DasBeef ). Love the turbo on/off switch. Big Muff. Nice & fat.
My amp's overdrive/distortion. Still the best one. |

What interests me the most about this discussion is the categories people put the various pedals in.
I would have put the Rat into the 'distortion" category, for example. Some put Muffs into distortion... others into Fuzz.

yes, the MXR Dist+ could go in multiple categories as well....
personally speaking, my general criteria for OD/dist/fuzz is the perceived amount of dirt/obnoxiousness from a given pedal. for example, a DS-1 can be subtle and musical, but a Big Muff is anything but subtle... like comparing a hockey stick to a baseball bat with nails sticking out of the "sweet spot". but everyone's perceptions are different. |

Of course there is a lot of overlapping, but I think we all agree that these divisions exist. There are pedals that can be used both as overdrives and distortions and fuzz, BD-2 is a good example, in the max setting its bit fuzzy. But normally used its an overdrive. Big Muff is a bit different to categorize, its a dist and a fuzz depening how its used and who is defining it.
