hi guys new to the forum, but am a 30 year roland /boss enthusiast.
my question is regrading the old pocket amp boss FA-1.
I still use my units to this day as a little gain boost for my 70s marshall master volume amps [cant live without them actually]. however, after 25 years,I am really tired of using batteries.
back in the mid 80s while on the road I was told that I could use a universal battery adapter, which worked fine for a while then it blew up 2 of my fa-1's... they were costly to replace back then and not every local store had them thus requiring next day shipping to my hotel room.... today, WOW! I cant believe they are this expensive.
my question is , has anyone modded these to accept an adaptor or utilize the psm-5 power supplies?
I have 2 that were blown sky high back in the day and I saved them for parts... eventually sent them to roland to try and fix, got them back with a note saying parts no longer available to fix.
I checked with kealey as they same to be the main boss pedal mod company and they claimed they could not only fix my blown units but that could also make it that they accept an adaptor.
HEEELP !
thanks, john |

Hi peedenmark7!
Yes - parts are available... if you know where to look. Keeley have the skills to both fix them and add a 9VDC jack.
I have made a small production run of clones using the original parts in a cast aluminium housing with true-bypass stomp switch and 9VDC jack and they work just fine - no issues with power at all. They are fantastic! (I have loaned a couple out and can't get them back......)
I can say that you will need to use a PSA type adapter - regulated 9VDC. An unregulated supply could well damage th FA-1 as it was only designed to work on a battery (nothing higher than 9VDC applied to the pedal). |

Yes, for sure, they can do it!!!
But, you can try to do it yourself, as Laurie said is a matter of where to seek your parts, and use a little patience.
Good Luck |

| You may want to try some of those new Lithium AA batteries or some other rechargables ... the only real issue here is I think that the Lithiums are designed for "burst" use (i.e. like in a digital camera) and standard duracell alkalines are designed for slow steady use (like a camp radio/flashlight) so before you spend a whack of money on rechargeables, make sure you get the ones that are designed for audio use. My brain is getting a little foggy on this ... but its important to match the kind of battery with the current draw of the device; you will get much better performance from BOTH the device and battery (especially if using rechargeables!) |

| If I were you, I will choose a mod for adapter and buy a good regulated adapter, I consider it a less expensive solution for a long time... |
