hey guys, my amp fucked up last night so i had to use my DS-1 and my OD-3 for dist and overdrive instead of amp dist. i know a lot of ye here love the OD-3 but i really didn't like the tone off it. it would be good for an more abrasive indie tone but i feel it be a very 'transparent' effect. in other words, it doesn't seem to apply overdrive to the whole signal. i feel a more saturated overdrive has a nicer tone to it. i'm not talking about gain by the way.
what do ye think?
is the OD-3 better used as a boost?
what would ye recommend for a smoother overdrive?
(oh yea i was using a solid state amp with it by the way so i know it'd sound better with tubes!)

I like OD-3 a lot, mainly because its transparent. I preserves the guitars own tone very well and you can adjust the amount of overdrive with the volume control of the guitar. There are lots of gain/drive wich is good when using a tube amp, it pushes the tubes hard without providing too much distortion in the pedal. Its very usable with single coils, dont sound as thin as many overdrives can do. A little smother alternative would be OD-1.

| ^^ yea i heard it was good with single coils thru a tube amp but i've an SG so that's me fooked then! has anyone any experience of it with humbuckers either using it as an overdrive or just using it to boost the tubes? |

Well, the only solution is to buy a Strat and a tube amp for your OD-3 |

I love the OD-3, but I love it for what I traditionally call an Overdrive. I think what you are looking for is closer to the category of Fuzz or Distortion.
One of the many reasons I love it is because I find it to be fairly transparent, which you cited as a negative.
If you are looking for a good distortion, I would search away from Boss pedals, don't get me wrong I love Boss just as much as everyone else here, but I've never really liked their line of Distortions. I find them interesting. Like the DF-2 was a great concept, and the DS-2 really isn't a bad distortion, but in general the Boss Distortion Sound is not what I prefer when it comes to Distortion.
Now the MT-2 Metal Zone is a whole different beast, and may infact be closer to what you are looking for controlfreak.
If not some other fine Distortions to try are:
Electro-Harmonix Little Big Muff (this just came out and is supposed to be closer to the old original big muffs)
ProCo Vintage Rat (They also have a new pedal called "Solo" that just came out, which sounds interesting)
MXR Distortion +

| ^^ thanks for the reply but i'm not actually looking for a dist, i use my marshall TSL's dist and OD channel for 2 diff distortions but the amp wasn't on top form so i just used a solid state and got a DS-1 and OD-3 straight in the front end to get the same set-up as before. just thought that the OD-3 wasn't really usable as a dist pedal. do people only use this as a boost for tube amp dist? |

"just thought that the OD-3 wasn't really usable as a dist pedal"
That's because it's not a Distortion pedal, it's an overdrive pedal :)
Eventhough Overdrive and Distortion are practically the same thing they have different names for a reason (well at least I would like to believe so). The generic thought is that an overdrive sounds less harsh than a distortion, but they are both distorting or overdriving.
And a quote from some other forum:
"Overdrive clips the soundwave only slightly, where as distortion clips it significantly. If you clip it enough, you can actually get a perfect square wave, which some fuzz pedals actually manage to accomplish." |

^^ yeah i know!
i meant i didn't think the OD-3 sounded nice as the pedal i'd stand on to get a gain tone. nothin to do with how much it distorts the signal |
