One mod I've seen is removing the first two of the three clipping sections. The schems can be found at effects heaven.
Good luck |

Certainly a possibility. I would probably use a switch, as I would like to be able to switch between the original and the modified version.
I am planning to jumper the Germanium diode pair via a switch as first step. They seem to be some sort of noise gate that stops signals in the range -0.3V to +0.3V

Still it sounds fine on my Marshall today. Im happy

The best part about that ad, Heavy Metalman's guitar is plugged into the output jack of the pedal. But he doesn't seem to give a shit.

Yes, I did mod my HM-2. I am using a 4DPT swith for the mods located in the battery compartment. My idea was to be able to switch between the original and more mellow overdrive type of distortion.
I use the original HM-2 setting for practicing at lower volumes while the overdrive setting is more useful for live where you get a lot of sustain from a cranked tube amp. In the latter situation, HM-2 has to much distortion.
I will post some fotos later.

hi cctsim. congrats on finding a mod for the hm-2. most modders and players shun the hm-2 as if it has the plague.altho i swore never to mod my hm-2 since i love it, i might try it since it essentially becomes 2 pedals in one. it might free some pedalboard space for another pedal. if its ok with you, could you outline how to do your mod? thanks. |

Hi Harris,
congrats on your hm-2 mods. looking at the photos you posted, you managed to switch in/out the Ge diodes that are used as crossover distortion notch. am i right? a detailed schematic would be appreciated.
if you are familiar with the schematic, the HM-2 implemented 2 clipping methods. one is in the negative feedback of the opamp using assymetrical diodes (overdrive effect) and the other is symmetrical diodes (distortion effect) prior to the tone section. BOSS pretty much implemented a soft clip and hard clip fx unit into one ala dual dirt pedal setup.

This is the first mod assigned to switch 1 that disables the Germanium diodes which implement some sort of noise gating (in my view):

| hi guys. i was experimenting(tho i swore never to mod the hm-2 but i did) and came up with this mod which i currently like. i changed the stock diode in d8 to a LED and the resulting distorted sound is fuller, rounder and more dynamic. the distortion is still there, only not as sharp, but less shrill. regards, LDR |
