Hi leonard d rock[

I doubt very much that you will hear any difference between the 4005's & a 4001, same goes for the 1N4148's, unless you have some faulty 4005's, which I also doubt.
They are all silicon diodes.
There may be a tiny difference in the junction/s, making one read 0.6V and another 0.7V, but that will be batch dependent.

Save your money.

Nice to hear that you have been experimenting.

There is a slight difference between the sound of 400x and 4148s.
The 400x diodes aren't as crisp as the 4148s

Hi Christo, Laurie & Guys.

I nearly overlooked this post Christo
Interesting find.

Were the 400x diodes a name brand of some cheaper no-names.
Might have to look at the transfer curves of the two diodes.

I have a component analyser/tracer, on my Hameg CRO at my work.
I could stick some tracing paper over the screen & manually
trace the curves.

Hey Laurie.
What are your thought on this, both the tracing of the curves, & the difference that Christo has observed, with the two different type of diodes?

Regards Dr. Bob

They were the run of the mill 1N4001 diodes, black with silver print.
The 400x diodes give you a soft clipping vs the hard clipping of the 4148s. This link has some of the diodes on a scope.
