A while back I had heard a compilation cd of Downtempo songs while I was at Tower Records. I was really interested in the music, but knew nothing about it. And then eventually forgot about it until 2 days ago.
2 Days ago I was at Tower Records again (it's right near my workplace, and all the eateries are there too) and I saw that compilation in the bargain bin for $12 which was much cheaper than the $25 they wanted in the first place, which I think was the reason I didn't buy it in the first place, and I've got to tell you I just love it.
I really still have no idea what Downtempo music is because I have heard screamy bad rock bands classified as Downtempo and Reggae songs classified as Downtempo.
The downtempo that is on this cd "Hotel Costes 8" by Stephane Pompougnac, pretty much sounds like slower House Techno music, really chill. I'm not a huge techno fan in the first place, but I honestly like this, especially tracks 1 and 4.
Wikipedia has this to say:
Downtempo (sometimes DownTempo, down tempo or downbeat) is an umbrella term for a laid-back electronic music style slower than house music (less than 118 beats per minute) but separate from ambient music. This can encompass specific genres such as lounge music, chill out, trip-hop, or acid jazz. It is usually intended more for relaxing and socializing than dancing, though some releases are produced for the dance floor.
The downtempo genre draws heavily on dub, hip hop, jazz, funk, soul, drum 'n' bass, ambient music, and pop and is often confused and/or mated with closely-related styles like IDM, trip hop, Psybient, and acid jazz
But every now and then I run into something ridiculous like:
http://www.myspace.com/variationsontheme
Which they classified themselves as Down-Tempo? Maybe it was a joke?
I know lot of you are from the UK, and there is a good amount of Drum N' Bass stuff over there or what not, so I imagine one of you might know.
Thanks

| Read the disclaimer in wikipedia before you ever reference anything in there. |

I have read the disclaimer and am rather confused about what your comment has to do with it.
I am well aware of how Wikipedia works and how its all user submitted and edited, but if you can find me a better definition for this type of music I would gladly take it.
This is what Dictionary.com has to say:
Main Entry: downtempo Part of Speech: noun Definition: electronic music with a tempo considered too slow for dancing; also called lounge music
Source: Webster's New Millennium Dictionary of English, Preview Edition (v 0.9.6) Copyright 2003-2005 Lexico Publishing Group, LLC
Main Entry: downtempo1 Part of Speech: adjective Definition: having or played at a slow tempo Etymology: 1967
Source: Webster's New Millennium Dictionary of English, Preview Edition (v 0.9.6) Copyright 2003-2005 Lexico Publishing Group, LLC
Main Entry: downtempo2 Part of Speech: adjective Definition: at a slow pace; relaxed Etymology: 1978
Source: Webster's New Millennium Dictionary of English, Preview Edition (v 0.9.6) Copyright 2003-2005 Lexico Publishing Group, LLC
I'm just wondering if any of you who know about this type of music have your own definition for it. |

i think you have an album of chill out music...i think it came about after long all night raves in ibiza and places.... the dj's would put these mixes so people could sit down and relax for a while....i have some here that i listen to now and again i'm not a big fan of 'rave' or 'house' music but some of the chill out is relaxing... |
