I noticed that Joe Satriani uses a DS-1 pedal in his live rig. Why is this pedal so cheap?

Does he use a modified one?

Thoughts? Is the CURRENT model worth buying for a general distortion, or is the Blues Driver a 'better' pedal for medium gain stuff ( i use a OD3 at the moment and am looking for a sound inbetween the OD3 and the full gain channel on my amp.. ie Van halen 'brown' sound?)

Thanks

Modify'ing pedals is completely new to me, as we hardly tamper with our stompboxes over here, but lately i looked into the most popular "mod-names", and i really like what i heard from, "INDYGUITARIST" - WOW

If lived in the States he would have been my choice for all the pedals that i want mod's on !

Look him up too, i think he is : indyguitarist.com

Yes, Joe Satriani uses at times a Keeley modified DS-1. The Ultra Mod by Keeley also incorporates the Seeing Eye Mod. I just got one a few weeks ago, I think it sounds a lot better than a stock MIT DS-1, though I don't know how it compares to an MIJ DS-1. I haven't come to a final conclusion about the pedal though as I am still crazy in love with the Keeley MT-2 Mod...

Also, about Indyguitarist, I get his newswletter, and he mentioned that he is relocating from Indiana to Nashville, Tennessee and the company will change names from IndyGuitarist to Wampler Pedals, just thought you'd like to know....

i think the ds 1 is so cheap because it sounds awful.
However, i have an old (1983)ds1 which sounds very cool.
This is the whole mit/j thing again isnt it?
My ds 1 sounds so good in fact i mistrust these modded versions by keeley, G bush jnr, himmler and whoever else.

Although still in production, I think on the market the old MIJ DS-1 pedals will take off sooner or later...

The DS-1 production numbers are about 10000 per month and I'm sure that contributes to the low price.

I think it is cheap because it of its simpliness. I have never tried MIJ one but I own a MIT and I am fully satisfied. It has enough gain... I can hardly imagine situation in which somoene needs more gain especially with a high-output humbucker. I have a Strat copy with an EMG 81 and I set DS-1 like this: dist for 3/4 and level for less than a half in front of an old tube amp which can produce only a slight crunch and it sounds great especially for a lead work. Of course DS-1 can produce also a very nice crunch. I've heard that MIJ ones sound more smoothly but I like when distortion sounds a little roughly so I think it is possible that I would prefer MIT one if I had a chance to compare both.

Everything from cars to appliances to guitars and pedals usually has at least one "entry level" product to get their name out to a wider audience so when they decide to upgrade, get more into it, or are looking for other related products, they may go with what they got started with. I mean my first pedal that I used all the time was a used DF-2, and when I got back into playing again after taking a break and was looking for new pedals, BOSS is where I started my search because of the good experiences....I think if you asked players what their first Boss pedal was, a large percentage would say the DS-1....

My first dist pedal was the Heavy Metal HM-2 I bought in 1984. Still works fine don t use any more. Replaced it with the Metal Zone MT-2. I just Bought one from a pawn shop for $40 plus psa-120t adaptor.I find the ds-1 sounds great with ge-7.I would like to know if any one has any info on modifying the pedal . For someone who wants to try it on their own like modifying pedals for dummies .if you know what i mean.
Thanks
Steve

Brian Wampler of Indyguitarist.com has a great book for beginning effects modifiers.

Here's a link:

http://www.guitartone.net/allmods.htm

The Downloadable PDF E-Book version is only $25

I purchased it myself, and am very happy with all of the information it contains. Some of those Synth Fuzz Mods for the DS-1 are very interesting.

I don't think he'll mind the free advertisement.

Just bought a DS-1 (used) from a store today. 100 swedish "kronor" = to something like $13-$14. Two plastic knobs were missing on this Taiwan made pedal.

My comparisons have led me to the conclusion that the MIJ DS-1 is by far the best DS-1 in stock form. The earliest MIT DS-1s sound 99% identical. The modern DS-1 sounds like .

As far as modified DS-1s go, I've tried a few options that IndyGuitarist offers as well as the Keeley Ultra/SEM. Keeley's version kicks some serious butt. I have not A/B compared it with any of my older DS-1s, but it does sound incredible when compared with a modern MIT DS-1!

FYI: I am basing the comparisons on testing several units:
5 MIJ DS-1s (some silver screw era, some black screw versions)
3 early black label MIT DS-1s
6 modern MIT DS-1s

I beg to differ...
I have an '82 MIJ DS-1 and a '04 MIT DS-1 and I'm liking my noisy MIT better lately. I like the squeaky way it sounds in comparison to the quieter MIJ.
