Hi, I've just acquired another early DS-1 from eBay. Totally mint, with box and manual, for 31. I couldn't believe it when it turned out to be a very early version, with skeleton switch and prototype circuit board. Anyway, when I'd calmed down, I took some pics to compare with my other, slightly later DS-1.

I'm wondering if the number on the pots, is a date code i.e '78 as that is the date given by the serial number decoder.

I always find pot and IC date codes comply roughly with the serial decoder.. Also remember the "sales dates" will be later than "production dates" - as the TW-1 exists in #7200 while it was not sold until the next month.. (per the data)
I like how the entire chassis is painted orange.. |

I assume the one on the left the older unit. It has full solder traces as opposed to pcb traces with solder pads! Wow, what a jump in technology eh?
Damn, now everything is micro-nano.. I like the 50s-70s era electonics, the 30s & 40s were too ancient. |

Just out of curiosity, what was the month of the date code on yours?
Mine was 11/78 (7600), and looks pretty much identical. I've got the painted bottom edge, but the foam pad is stuck to the board on mine, not the fish paper.
Those are not date codes on the pot, I don't think -- one of mine is designated J81F.
Did your bottom plate screws come with lockwashers?

I haven't had time to side by side them for tone yet, but I'd be surprised if there was much difference, as apart from the input resistor, the components are pretty much identical. But I will try it out and let you know. I need to take a few more pics, serial number etc. I wondered about the pot codes, as normally they seem to be just a random selection of letters and numbers, but these seem different, and the year would be right. Maybe, maybe not. The screws on the back plate had the standard washers, three of one and one of the other, always find that a bit strange.

A few more pics. I've just noticed that the box also has the long dash, compared to the later version.
