Well today I bought a beat up DD-2 for $35 and so far I really dig it. From what I've read I understand that the DD-2 is an analog pedal with actualy only the delay chip being digital...am I correct? It's really nice...it's not pingy and has nice warm repeats and doesn't have an abundance of delay time (I prefer it that way), but it isn't quite as lush as my Deluxe Memory Man. Now I know this is an ignorant question on my behalf, but does it even compare to the DM's? I've always wanted a DM-2 or 3 but have never come across one, would it still be worth searching out? The DD-2 is definitely a keeper though in the meantime

A DD-2 for $35,- is a steal!

I actually own 2 DD-2's (which cost me much more) because I like the DD-2 so much and would hate it if I couldn't replace a broken one. I used to own one years ago and sold it I'm not making that mistake again.

Now, to answer your question: I also own a DM-2 . It is a different pedal with a different sound, but I wouldn't say that one is better than the other.

The Dm-2 is the more musical of the 2 (IMHO), because it has a warmer sound than the DD-2 and because of the roll off of highs it blends in with the music you are playing. It fattens, enhances or expands(?) your tone. The Delay time is quite short, so it's not very suitable for rhythmic delay a la the Edge (except for songs of the Boy album)!

For the rhytmic delay the DD-2 is very suitable and warm, almost anolog sounding. I don't really like the sound of the short delays, but that's where the DM-2 comes in.

BTW, and I don't know if I can say this in a Boss forum, but I also own a Ibanez Delay champ analog delay and that one sounds almost exactly like the Dm-2 at one third, if not less, of the price. I think it is actually a Dm-3 clone as it also has a dry-out. You might want to check that one out.

Hope this sheds some light on your question.

Regards,

Some Weird Sin

Thanks guys! I've been playing with it a lot and I really really like it. I've got an RV-3, an EHX Deluxe Memory Man, and a Morley Emerald Echo (analog, but I'm not sure what circuit it is based on) already, but I couldn't pass it up when I came across the DD-2. I found it in a small shop in a nearby town where one of the guys that works there was just selling it for himself, as it was his pedal. It's definitely seen some action over the years, the decoder dates it to March '85. Sounds and works very nicely though. I know that it won't sound like a DM-series pedal... it is a digital delay after all...I was a little too tired and a little excited when I finally got home last night...thoughts are more together now

The DD2 is great!!

All the Boss delays are great {DM's and DD's]

Like what people have mentioned before DM's sound a little warmer, but really the DD2 does not sound that digital anyway.

Does the DD2 sound like the DD5 or 6. I personally do not think so, they all sound different, but Strato did mention this a long time a ago: All Boss pedals do sound different, so get 6 DD2's and they will all sound a little different, so really, very hard to compare.

Another point: Any delay will sound almost similar to other delays. Comare different brands and you will get almost the same kind of result. What you do need to take into account is the year of manufactur.

Compare late 70s delays with other late 70s delays and most of them are very similar.

An example: The Dod's come very close to the Boss DM's
their digital brothers sound a little warmer compared to the Boss digital ones. Why? Because most of them have limited delaytime, which make the pedal warmer [read less clear, and therefore lesser quality]

The whole thing is really: Do you like the sound of them or not??
Hey nothing new today eh??!

Here's what it looks like... slightly chewed up and could use a good cleaning, but I haven't taken it off my board since I got it, so the clean-up will have to wait. I couldn't get the photo upload to work so I took the photobucket route...forgive me (and correct me) if I didn't follow proper procedure.

Velcro'd and ready to go
I really like it... it will surely stay with me for a long while. However, I probably would part with it for a DM-2 or 3, but I won't be holding my breath until I come across that opportunity, but I'll still keep it an option Until then, I'll still be a happy camper.

^^^ its pretty dirty, but it has potential. once you find a new knob clean it up a bit it will look good. i clean between the knobs by popping them off and slipping a pencil into a cloth or a sock to get into those crevices between the shafts. armor all works good on the rubber foot pad too

Does Armour All make the foot too slippery or does it have enough "grab" after wiping it in?

No worries. The site upload doesn't always work very well so any method that actually works is welcome

Does that DD-2 have silver text writing on the control plate? The earliest DD-2s had cream coloured writing. The serial number/production month when it changed is still unknown.
