In the near future I have a gig with a band that was really active in the 80s and since then we have jammed regularly a couple of times every year, so we are not very rusty. The gig is only for about 15 minutes, there are around ten other bands, and to make a sound check seems pointless. I dont even know what amps there are going to be, probably massive gain Marshalls as most of the other bands are of the heavy metal type. As you understand there is no time for a lot of pedals to adjust (or the amp), I need one clean and one distorted sound, I suppose they add reverb in the PA. I have to set the supposed Marshall for clean sound. So what pedal would you suggest for this? Maybe two? Interesting question I have a lot of thoughts: Visual sounds Route 66 SD-2 OD-20

hi goran.....sounds good to me 'bro..i'm not familar with the route 66..i've heard of it of course just not what it sounds like..but in these situations..i believe in the K.I.S.S rule...personally i would go with what you described....in fact the only difference being my twin tube overdrive is a dual overdrive..crunch and insane.... and with one of my dd3's and i can cover most bases with them....
i'm going......my dynacord rotary sim just arrived..... ..... |

hey Goran.
id say a just the bare essentials. CE-2, DD-5, and maybe a OD-1. :)
throw in a EQ for good measure. |

Well, there isnt time for more than one pedal at this situation, when the band before us leave the stage were on. A pedalboard could be used of course, but then I have to use battery on each effect. As I wrote I dont even know what amps to use, Ill guess its no Fender Deluxe or something I like and are familiar with. So the question is more: How do I get a good clean sound out of a high gain amp, as I never use them. When I need serious distortion I use a pedal into a clean amp. And there is no time to test and twiddle, just plug in and go, and I need a clean, but powerful, sound.. For the dirt I use a pedal.

a lot of these sort of amps have two or three channels one is usually designated for clean.....if not turn the preamp gain or channel volume down to about halfway or down as much as you need too and play a chord hard on the guitar to see if its still distorting,if this is clean enough for you turn the master up to compensate and i would turn all the tone controls to 12 o clock..basically 'flat' if you have a couple of secs you might be able to tweak them slightly..i.e add a bit more bass etc...one other thing goran..if your really going to be that tight for time in setting up ...put new batteries in the pedals, check all leads and connectors beforehand and good luck.......!!!..... .. ..
p.s ..might be an idea to bring a spare guitar in case you break a string.....make sure it has it's own strap for a quick changover.. |

Thanks for the advices Franzoni!
I have used high gain amps but never heard a good clean sound from them, just bad clean And I of course know how to use a pre-amp volume and master. But my thinking of using a pedal was to get a good clean sound out of a (hopefully not) bad sounding clean amp. You can use SD-2 in crunch mode to colour the tone without distorting it too much and hit the lead channel on SD-2 to get the dirt. Or use OD-20 in about the same way. A problem for me, when playing, is that if I dont like the tone I dont play as good as if I like the tone. I mean if the amp is playing against you instead of with you And there is only about 15 minutes total, not 15 minutes to warm up I could use some of this to get there Sure, I will have a spare guitar and an A/B box.

ya like Franz said, most hi gain amps have clean and dirt channels. so 1 pedal eh? i would have to say OD-1 to chunkify the clean channel and send the distortion channel to hell!
Goran, i know what you mean about these amps and clean tone too |
