Had a bit of a computer crash last weekend and lost 1.2GB from my Bossarea folder. The big mistake was that I thought my backup was up to date so I went ahead and formatted everything just to find out later that I only had partial backup.
Not perfectly sure what I've lost so far. I know I had a 1.9GB folder and that it's now only 700MB so a lot of data has disappeared. Most of it is probably pictures gathered from the Internet which isn't of great importance but I know that my serial number archive and the source code to the serial number decoder are also casualties. Compared to that I don't even care that my last holiday photos are gone.

Hi Bossarea & Guys
I feel for you Bossarea. There are no words comforting enough....
Was it a low level format, (the worst kind) or was it a quick format?
Is there No possible way of recovering anything????
Regards Dr. Bob

It was a quick level format but the disks were immediately restored with 500GB of data so most of it is probably overwritten now anyway.
Got a few other disks floating around that may contain parts of the data. I replaced my file server only 2 months ago and the old one should still have its disks intact. That server had limited disk space so did not hold a lot.
Old preverb: Real men don't take backups

Hi bossarea I can send you back a copy of the 14 PIN OD-1 service sheets. Last thing you sent me.
Let us know if we can help you out with any of our Tech & data sheets, I don't keep a list, but just ask, & I'll go have a look through my pile.
Regards Dr. Bob. |

I like to run Second Copy from Centered Systems http://www.secondcopy.com so I have 6 copies of my data to die for layin' around on separate disks, always synced, always ready to go.
With it, I'll create a profile to sync a folder to a 2nd or 3rd hard drive. There are many sync programs out there but this one just has as much as you want. Easy, peasy & I can't say enough about it. Very highly recommended as it wins product of the year awards et al.
I dunno about Windows Backup, restore points, offline tape, or even imaging. I use imaging at work like Symantec LiveState or Acronis True Image Server but they're really for the propagation of clean installs to like hardware during rollouts. If you use imaging everday or so & you have a crash.. you may go back to your previous image but find you're one mouse-click away from that blue-screen you started with. Backups to 2nd or outboard hard drives seem to be the best to me. They are fast, reliable, closed, sealed-systems. Of course a drive can go down which is why you should keep 2 or 3 copies of your precious data.
Thus, I prefer to simply backup my data directories. I can usually reinstall Windows in a couple hours, restore my data in another couple, reinstall apps & configure things a couple more after that. If you have a living "Install & Configuration" document with serials etc. & are like me where you get leaner & meaner with your apps everytime you reinstall your OS, you can comfortably get back online in a few hours. |

Well, I thought I had a pretty good backup system too but due to a little "typo" my scheduled backup never actually started so my latest backup was two months old.
Anway, I've spent the day recovering data and managed to get my copy of the bossarea web site fully recovered. That was a big relief because it also contained the serial number decoder and photo gallery source code. In the recycle bin on my workstation I found a ton of pictures as well as a copy of the serial number archive. Doesn't look like I lost more than a months worth of serial numbers there so that's another big relief. I even managed to recover my holiday photos by recovering the camera's memory card.
Right now I'm pretty pleased. I can't think of anything important that I've actually lost. Thanks for the support everyone |

Hi Bossarea
Go give yourself 5 elephant stamps & 10 gold stars, for all the effort.
Better still give yourself a big pat on the back. Even better than that, get your girlfriend, to give you a big hug..
Good effort.

| It’s great news that nothing important was lost. It is always good to occasionally check that backups are actually backing up the intended data. Another thing to consider is protecting against physical disasters like fire or flood. Backup copies sitting by the computer being backed up will not do much good if the entire building is destroyed by fire. |

| I know that in Holland there's a service availible, for say 4 euros per month, that your backups are automaticly stored by your provider on one of their servers. |

I guess it's the computer version of a near death experience. You don't appreciate your data enough until you almost lost it.
I installed a new backup application yesterday and configured it to back up every Wednesday at 2AM. Will have to verify that it actually did the job this time. |
